over heating problem
 
OK so here is it i towed my boat out to the lake last weekend and my distributor went out the lower bushing craped out on me what a racket it made sounded like a bad wheel baring

so i went and bought a new on 182.00 later put it in re timed the jeep and now my temp gauge is running about 216 now this truck has never ran hotter that the first line like a 1/4 of a tank mark if you were looking at it it dose not get hotter than 216 but makes me worried because this is not normal for this jeep i flushed the coolant today and was thinking about getting a lower thermostat for it what do you all think i should do and it only dose this when i have to boat on it other wise it runs just a bit above the norm but still hoter than what i am used to

The engine bays on those ZJs are like ovens. I installed a Hesco High Flow waterpump and a new 3 row radiator that I bought off ebay, along with new rad hoses, and that solved my overheating problems. Prior to that the temperature that my engine was getting to, especially when using the airconditioning, was higher and higher with the age and mileage of the jeep. A cooler thermostat might make your engine run poorer and get worse gas mileage as the 02 sensors send messages to the fuel pressure regulator to lean out at a certain operating temperature. A 180 degree thermosstat will not allow that temperature to be reached before openning the termostat to flow the coolant through the rad. You could then run the risk of running a little rich....but for some guys they don't mind that.

Maybe the original T-stat is bad. Try and put a new one in.

Another thing you might want to consider is swapping out your old fan clutch for a new one. This often gets overlooked as a potential problem, especially in higher mileagr jeeps where the clutch may have lost some of it's fluid that signals the fan to fully engage at a certain temperature. It's an easy inexpensive swap.

thanks guys it was a bad head gasket ended up rebuilding the top end
