WJ Owners - Please read

ok please help WJ owners....I am assisting my friend buy a $5k SUV for her daily driver

I found a Blue Limited 2002 WJ with the 4.0 2wd

It is blue with chrome rims (two good shape, two BAD shape), leather nice and complete but worn, basic radio, and all the power locks/windows etc (see bad, pass. front window does not work). I was given good service history for the past two years, and was only driven 7K miles in the last year. It has a total of 172,XXX miles. 3 owner vehicle, and 75% baby/family car.

The good:

Starts right up, feels good, no unusual wear on rotors, new battery and fuel pump, no fluid build-up in bad areas, no visible leaks in brake lines and hoses (10 min inspection, so not complete but fairly thorough) Dash is good, no rips in leather, no cracks in bumpers and no major body damage. New front headlight (replaced due to damage to front end, new bumper as well...saw paperwork and write-up, no frame damage)

The bad:

Passenger side window does not work, passenger fog-light bulb out, drivers headlight is yellow/discolored (quick fix with meguiars refinish kit? no water build-up), needs new rear tires ASAP, no oil change in last year (only 7K), 4 or 5 minimal dents around vehicle (ex drivers b pillar, hood, etc) but nothing major, some scratches on bumpers, and the chrome on two wheels is shot (prolly repaint all four, which would be a fun project), the emissions light is on (could be something as simple as an o2 sensor? or could be worse? are there typical issues with the 4.0 2002 wj's?) Is there a way i can have the problem code displayed without taking it to a shop with a diagnostic tool?

So he was asking $4900....I offered $4K for my friend, thinking that with $750 in service and parts we could get it dialed in. The price is now $4300. Is that a good deal? This is kind of an urgent matter so please respond with any and all info :D

I think if she can get the car for around $4K, with the $1K that is left over we could make it into a sweet ride....agreed?

If one person is super assistive through this process and helps me save her more $$$...I will either paypal the individual a "surprise" :D monetary amount or Jeep related products as a thank you for their troubles...it won't break the bank but nothing wrong with free $$$$$$$$$ or parts

To check the code, do the key trick.

http://www.wjjeeps.com/faultcodes.htm

"Retrieving codes: Turn the ignition key until the digital odometer displays, repeat three times in succession and then back to "On" (On/Off, On/Off, On/Off, On). At the fourth "On" the odometer will be replaced with codes. If no codes are present then "Done" will appear."

From there see what fault codes come up and check them out at the bottom of the link. The window problem most likely is the window regulator, this seems to be a common problem with WJ's so I suggest sticking with OEM, believe me (they cost $$ though) . I changed a total of three regulators (both front windows). The reason is it was three was because I opted to go aftermarket which was a big mistake and it failed within a few months. Although if the window is staying up, it might be something else. It sounds like a good ride. Just make sure everything performs properly if you test drive it again.

sounds like your buying a problem... you can save big $ in the long run if you just have a certified mechanic take a look at the vehicle. life is like a box of chocolate you never know what your gonna get... sorry, i know that was corny but just trying to help

sounds like it needs some TLC and its a good deal
but get a mechanic to look at it or take it to a auto chain like autozone to reed what the code is.

check:
dose any of the oil in engine, trans, diff, or TC smell burnt?
any seals leaking under it?
do the faces of all the rotors look ok after you drive for a bit?

since its a limited:
for the pealing chrome going to be a bit harder to get it off and re paint, just get a set of alloys and save the time. and sell the 2 good ones.

- dose it have TPMS?
if so make sure their is a magnet and have a real 5th wheel
- that you get 2 keys
- if it has dual zone control make sure the heat and air conditioning works

thanks sdteam...I do need to get someone to check it out!

straty1987 - +rep for you! that is exactly the kind of info I was looking for. if I can get a good deal on it (below $4k) then I think with the $1000 she has left over she could make it into a sweet ride.

thanks for the help guys...keep it coming!

id stay away, huge miles for an 02 not to mention known service issues and a CEL... your gonna end up dumping more money into this thing then its worth... not to mention your buying 2wd so the it doesnt really matter that its an SUV... but her a honda or something like that your money will go farther and the repairs are cheaper.
