Mine doesn't thump it makes a sound as if you're hearing a siren in the distance and you can hear it when the radio is off and the air isn't blowing full speed.

I usually hold it for a few seconds so it can go into park but with the issue I'm having it locks the shifter so I can't move it all the way up into park.

Yeah I try not to drive with them on since its doing this now but I notice I cannot see as well as before. I may have to get this fixed pretty soon so it'll be easier to drive at night.

I would get new especially if you drive a lot. I'm leasing mine with 15K miles and I'm already 5K over my miles. Not saying leasing is better or anything but if you do drive a lot a new car is better...
