This isn't true - optical and coaxial are just transport mechanisms to carry a digital signal - they are rated at mbps the same way a network connection is, based on how many bits (1's and 0's)...

In systems with the factory Amp, the headunit puts out a digital signal over the CAN bus to the amplifier. You can't get a signal pre amp without an adapter like a PAC, but those have more issues...
