If you pick up a Canbus LED and put it in the rear hatch it will eliminate the glow. Thats what I did. A Canbus is and LED bulb with a resistor built onto it. I bought mine here...

I live and work in a real small town, about 3 miles to work. I get about the same, 11-12 mpg in town. Like mentioned above when I travel I usually average between 17-20 mpg.
