thanks for all the info! I'll have to try the simpler fix first, then progressively go more complex/expensive if the problem isn't solved.

i think i got a road version or something because the only plate-looking thing i saw when i was under it changing the oil was a hard plastic/fiberglass panel that i removed to loosen the oil tank...
