I prefer the dry filters myself. I have a K&N on my diesel and it is always crapped up with something. It gets tedious cleaning it also. JMO.

The thermostat will have no effect on cold starting. It will basically maintain engine temperature at 180F once warm thats it. I see no reason it cannot be used in a gas engine in that climate.
