I got this error message last weekend: Service Electronic Throttle Control

Great. My 2016 JGC CRD was running fine so I let it go for until I returned home, 250 miles away. My wife and I were out of town on a road trip with another couple.

Searching here, I found several threads and posts on Service Electronic Throttle Control. I don’t have the posts now but people said it was something related to the DPF, the soot not being fully burned off, and about the Oil Life % remaining. But I don’t remember the specifics.

Back story: Last week, my dealership had changed oil & filter but they failed to reset the Oil Life % remaining. (sigh) (post 33 in the recent Jeep Wave program discussions) So I planned to reset it later and went on my weekend road trip. And that’s when the error message appeared, 250 miles from home. Fortunately my 2016 JGC CRD got us home without incident. I hope driving it in that state, with the Check Engine Light on, was okay to do.

The fix: Last night I reset the Oil Life % remaining back to 100%, and when I started her up, the Check Engine Light was off. Great!

Mileage:
- 44,248: Service Electronic Throttle Control, EVIC error message
- 44,559: Oil Life reset to 100% — no error message, no Check Engine light
I put 311 miles on my rig while the Check Engine light was lit.

Thank you to all the posters here who share information like this. I was able to resolve the problem.

I get this message when I have both feet on the pedals. I'm used to using brake / throttle together to spool up engine (especially turbo'd ones) for immediate power when needed like crossing a very busy intersection by me.

I got that message and turbo under boost code and limped home during a snow storm last winter. Result of too much snow / slush being sucked into air box.

You can also get it when some wires rub a hole through your air line on the hot side of the intercooler just before it goes into the silencer. Caught this before it wore completely through. Dealer is looking at it now.

Tough to see in the picture, but it wore 2/3rds of the way through the hose. Another 10,000 miles and it would likely have gotten all the way through.

Many possible causes then, I guess. I’m glad mine is cleared.

And I sometimes spool up like jaje does too. I haven’t gotten the message doing that.

That happened to me on vac in FL. was in traffic and had to get on the brake and throttle almost at same time... Got the error, jeep died, and we rolled off the side of the road. Fortunately it restarted with no errors and we were able to continue.....

It's freaky when it does that as you lose power for a short time where it goes into limp mode. I think it thinks the throttle is stuck and the owner is on the brake trying to stop runaway.

Doubtful considering it's an electronic throttle. Nothing to stick.

I found other posts & threads about 2014s going into limp mode. Mine is a 2016 and it ran basically the same. Only once in the 300+ miles did it feel like limping, otherwise it ran fine.

I just got this light, dealer pulled codes and stated Injector failure, turbo under boost, and a few others they stated were all probably related to injectors. They took it in and had to order an injector tester tool from Chrysler, and now two weeks later they are waiting on engineers to tell them what's wrong with it... some kind of star program.

Hopefully they will figure it out soon and I get my Jeep back.

Kind of an old thread. But I had the same message come up when my MAP when out. It would drive fine some days and not on others; message would come and go. Had the dealership replace the MAP and have been driving fine ever since

Mine ended up being 1 bad injector. I've had it back for two days now, and it drives great now. Seems like it has more power now than it did before the light came on. Injector must have been on its way out for a while.

My CEL and Electronic Throttle Control warning lights have reappeared sporadically in the last 8,000 miles. When the ETC comes on, if I reboot the JGC it goes away. Otherwise when it’s on the JGC is in limp mode.

Hello echo7tango,

We're sorry to hear you're having such a hard time with these lights. If you decide you'd like to get this looked at by the dealer, let us know. We'd be glad to help.

Try getting it to the dealer while the lights are on. They'll be able to see what was out of tolerance to trigger it. For mine it was a boost pressure issue, and ended up being a bad MAP. Probably due to soot build up from the EGR and CCV systems.

That’d be ideal. If I can, I will.

Yesterday I got the Service Electronic Throttle Control message 2x. The 2nd time, I was 200 miles from home. Both times a stop & restart cleared the ETC (electronic throttle control warning light). The CEL has been constantly on since Wednesday — within a week of getting it back from the dealer for this problem. The ETC came on then, and a stop-restart cleared it, but the CEL has been constantly on. I called the dealer and have an appointment for Tuesday morning.

Hi Jasmine / JeepCares, thank you. I’d love some help in solving this problem. How can you help?

My JGC CRD was absolutely trouble-free for some 44,000 miles, but in the last 9,000 miles the CEL and ETC and “limp mode” has been reappearing. I want to own and drive this car for hundreds of thousands of miles. 500,000, if I can get it. I want this rig to be part of my family. Resolving this would be great.

Hello echo7tango,

From a customer care perspective, we'd create a case so this is formally documented and then escalate to a Case Specialist. He or she will work with you and the dealership toward a potential solution. If this is something you might be interested in, please send me a direct message with your VIN.

Thanks!

I’ll bring my JGC to the dealer tomorrow.

But a funny thing happened tonight... after 2 weeks and 1,000 miles with the CEL being on (the CEL came on a week after getting it back from the dealer the last time), tonight the CEL turned off. Bizarre. Just in time for the dealer to *not* see the CEL on.

In those 1,000 miles, 4x the Service Electronic Throttle Control message has displayed, with the Electronic Throttle Control warning light going on. Each time, I shut her down and re-start, and the ETC warning light turned off (while the CEL remained on).

Bizarre, but I’m hoping that the codes should be stored.
