I have a 1989 jeep Cherokee and I don't know what wrong with it when I'm driving it it will act like it slips into neutral an I have to pull over put it in park and turn the key a few times before starting it again and ten it will go for a little bit and do it all over again. I have changed the transmission fluid/filter/ gasket as well as the fuel filter. After doing the gasket filter and fluid it ran like a champ for about a week and then did it all over again. Any suggestions would help!

Welcome to the garage.
So the problem was there before the fluid change, right?
Not familiar with your jeep, do you know which transmission it has?
The slipping can come from several things: could be a low line pressure, which let the clutches/bands slip. Could also be a worn clutch or band.
But first need to know which transmission we are talking about.

It's an automatic transmission it did happen before the fluid change but worked for about a week then then started all over again.

I had the same thing happy to my 1989. Turns out aamco wanted to rebuild the transmission for $3900. I took it to another guy and it was $79 for a speed sensor and another $150 to fix the aamco damage.

It would act like it would slip out of gear while cruising and rev really high then slip back in, maybe.

Good luck, mine lasted until 155,000 miles until I traded it in.

I ment which automatic transmission it has. Most probably the Aisin AW4?

Could it possibly be the NSS( neutral safety switch?)
Don´t think so, the neutral safety switch is used for the starter motor circuit, so that it can only start in park or Neutral.

The best is to use a scanner to read an eventual fault message, which would tell you which part is wrong.

If you want to test the speed sensor, here is the procedure when using a simple volt meter:

SPEED SENSOR
1) Disconnect electrical connector at speed sensor located on
adapter housing or extension housing. Connect ohmmeter leads between
speed sensor electrical terminals.
2) Rotate transmission output shaft and note ohmmeter
reading. Ohmmeter needle should fluctuate to indicate speed sensor
operation. Replace speed sensor if no reading is obtained.

I know this is an old thread, but ohm out the three solenoids on the valve body. They should read between 11-15 Ohms. Anything outside that reading, the solenoid should be replaced. I would replace all three if you are already in there.
