I have a 1996 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0. While driving there is a rattle coming from the back (while going over bumps). It is not the gate, it is coming from below, (shocks, sway bar, or just the c clip rear end) just would like other input or things to look into. I'm not a mechanic (a body and paint guy) but know enough to do more than basic repairs.. Jeep has 170,000 miles, owned for 1 month..

I'd start with looking @ the shocks. Possibly worn control arm bushings/swaybar end links like you said. Get underneath & start rocking the Jeep around (I usually push with my knees/feet), put a pry bar on some things & look for whats loose.

Also look @ the heat shield above the muffler/cat. Mine pulled away from the body & tapped horribly on the exhaust.
