Started the Jeep up this cold morning. Started to drive off and noticed the box wasnt changing up, stuck in 1st gear. The warning light was up on the dash also. A few hundred metre's later I stopped the jeep and shut down the engine. Waited and restarted and then she drove fine, warning light stayed up for a few miles then went out.
What the hell was that all about ?

When you do the key dance you will probably get the P0700 code, telling that the TCM had set a fault code. You will need to get it scanned to know what the problem was. It could have something to do with the cold, so i would just wait and see if it happens again.

I googled this fault and found a link to a technical bulliten saying a weak battery on a cold can cause this fault. My battery is suspect so Ive bought a new Bosch S5 unit. Fingers crossed thats it

Could you have inadvertently knocked the gear stick to the left? This would lock it in first gear if you were stationary or moving slowly at the time. Then just a simple matter of tapping the gear stick to the right a few times to bring it up the gears until you engage full auto (D) again.

He has a WJ, the gear lever doesn´t go sideways on that one. He also got the check engine light, showing some fault was present.
