I just bought 2001 cherokee 4.0
Has a newer motor installed
When first cranking runs fine until 180-190° then just shuts off
After about 10 minutes it will crank back up
Sets no codes
Yesterday I left home drove about 4 miles
Running about 50mph engine seem to shut off all gages everything
While still rolling about 40 mph I was about to rollout road and it started back on its on
I stopped about a mile up the road and it wouldn't crank back for about 15 minutes then crank back up and ran fine

check the cranks sensor I have seen similar problems caused by a bad crank sensor. also check the wire harness that runs by the back of the valve cover I have seen wires grounding out on the head bolt studs.

I agree with ^ if you mean the engine running by the use of your word 'cranking'.
The word 'cranking' when referring to an engine typically means the starter motor turning over the engine in order to start it.

And yes a bad CPS doesn't always throw a CEL.
I had that almost exact scenario with my old '94 XJ which turned out to be an intermittently bad CPS when it was subjected to the heat from a hot engine.

Could also be the vehicle is intermittently losing battery power if its not the CPS.
Check the battery terminals for looseness and corrosion.
Since its a new engine a ground terminal could of been not connected or not torqued down properly.
