As a new member I want to say hi to everyone. I planning on becoming a new Grand Cherokee owner soon and I was wondering if I could get some opinions on the '13 vs '14 GK. I started looking for a '13 when the '14's came out and although I've found some interesting bargains on the outgoing models, the prices are mostly in the same range so I could go either way. I'm looking at the Limited model. Here are my pros and cons, any input to help make a decision is welcome.
2013 pros:
1.maybe cheaper to purchase, insure, property tax ect
2. more familiar dash controls and a cd/dvd player(I'm in my 60's and the full blown technical stuff is not that important to me.).
3.The '13 actually feels a little lighter and quicker, the new 8 speed auto felt a little sluggish and always shifting in the '14.
4.Generally less unneeded bells and whistles.
2014 pros:
1. LOOKS! I like the new grille and lights, dual exhausts, and the 10 spoke wheels. The five spokes on the '13 look a little dated.
2.Slightly better milaege, although I don't drive quite as much as I used to so it's less of an issue.
2.better choice of color combinations
3.There may be other technical improvements that I'm not aware of that would be great to have.
wow! once I wrote this out it really looks like a head vs heart thing, doesn't it? I also noticed(annoyingly) that the '13 has a somewhat soft chrome moulding down the side and the '14 doesn't have any door protection at all. It looks like both would get dinged up and unsightly in no time.
Whew, thanks for reading please give me some feedback.
Steve

Welcome to JeepGarage!!

What is this GK you speak of as I've never heard of it, Do you mean the Grand Cherokee?

The 8spd is slower?? That is completely different than anyone has said. Check out the WK2 section of the forum for everything 2001-2014

You only get the dual 5 spoke on the Summit or SRT

^ That was enough for me. The other pros for me was just icing on the cake. And all the other cons, I just deal with for the pro of looks. Welcome!

Hi,
Thanks for welcome and the replies. Yes I did mean Grand Cherokee. Sorry about that, I've seen it abbreviated like that on other forums. The eight speed may have a learning curve that hadn't locked in yet. I think it had an eco button that held the upshifts longer when off. That's the kind of stuff I'm interested in hearing about. Maybe 10 spoke isn't the right term, but the wheels had more than five large spokes.

It's actually WK - the code Jeep/Chrysler uses for the 2005 - 2016 Grand Cherokee. We call it WK2 for the 2011 - 2016 because they are completely different than the 2005 - 2010 Grand Cherokees.
The wheel you speak of is: Aluminum twin five-spoke, Satin Clear Coat finish

This is probably because the '14 you drove was in ECO mode. You have to defeat ECO mode every time you restart (royal PITA)

The best financial purchase is probably the 2013, you'll get a killer deal on one today. However, if you really like the styling changes on the 2014 go for what you want, you only live once.

ECO mode:banghead: big con! But I have it mastered now: 1) start car 2) turn off ECO. 1) start car 2) turn off ECO...etc.

What about the ding potential on the doors. Has anyone had experience with that or come up with a solution besides parking away from everybody else?

Door edge protectors??lol.. Eco mode shifts the gears fast. People have stated turning Eco mode off it makes the V6 peppier.

I hear you. I was looking at those big, clean, flawless doors the other day, thinking that they are 100% unprotected from a door ding from a douche bag. Don't have a good answer for this one other than minimizing the risk. I almost always park on an end spot, that cuts the door ding possibility in half.

Mine has 26k miles and has no dings. We park carefully, but not insanely so. You should be fine.

Thanks. On the door thing....I was gassing up my wife's forester on a windy day and one of the above mentioned doucebags in the car to our left let a gust rip the passenger door out of her hand as she got out. Smack! right into the Subby. It had a strip so the damage was minimal, but I'm just sayin'....They're out there. My wife didn't care. As long as it goes when she puts it in D, she's happy. It must be nice.

I looked at the Black Forest green but felt it looked more black in person than the picture and looked only marginally green in the light

So I opted for the true blue

I have the V8 and even in ECO mode, it still performs very well. But that's probably due to all the torque the V8 has over the V6 so drivability would be better.

I can't really comment on the ext color, but I have the black int and it gets dusty rather fast. I tend to have to wipe it down twice a month.

As far as the 13 vs 14, I would only get the 14 for the tech package, but it seems you want it to be a little more simple, so a 13 may be better for you. The thing about this new tech package is that it shouldn't take all that long to get used to it. You still are going to need to get used to the 13s.

If I was in your shoes, I would most likely get a 14 unless I got a hell of a deal on the 13.

There is a thread recently that people were able to purchase the chrome Grand Cherokee strip for the doors.. So that might be an option if you want
