Hi all,
I'm about to do an oil change on my new GC 3.6 It looks like it has a removable cartridge type filter on top. I believe that the filter has changed slightly for '14, so I'll make sure to get the right one. Whats the best procedure to get it changed quickly and cleanly. I'm a retired mechanic so I just need some specific tips. I'm planning on using synthetic, whats the weight recommendation for New England area. First Jeep for me....it's an amazing ride.

If you are looking for the filter, there is a thread that has that information. I think the specs for the oil is 5w-30

Maybe I was wrong about the filter being a cartridge type. Is it just a normal looking screw on unit?

I think that the online manual said 5-20 also, but in the warm weather 5-30 would probably be ok too.

I just did my first oil change on my 3.6 and it is a cartridge filter. I had
a 4 cylinder Terrain which i traded for the jeep and it also had a cartridge
filter on the top of the engine. A lot of the Terrain owners on the Terrain
forum use a vacuum pump called Mity Vac. It uses tubing which you insert
down the dipstick tube, pump the device 3 or 4 times and it draws the oil
out. I was concerned about it getting all the oil so i marked the pump at
the 6 qt. level and thats where it stopped. It's a lot easier than using ramps
or jack stands. It took about 10 mins. to do. It's a little pricey at a little
over a hundred, but over time it will make changes a lot easier.

Just curious, I never used a pump before to extract used motor oil and I don't know if I read what you were saying correctly.

You were concerned that you would "not" get all the used oil so you marked at 6qrts and kept pumping till it stopped? or were you concern that it "would" get all the oil and so you stopped at 6qtrs?

I looked it up and it is $119 which is a bit pricey but if it means I dont have to lay on my old back and crawl to get the plug out...

the procedure for the 3.6l v6, is to loosen the cap to the oil filter cartridge, then drain the used engine oil from oil pan, this will also cause the oil filter cartridge to drain as well.
will not fully drain if oil filter cap is on tight, need to loosen it before draining oil.
once oil is drain from engine and oil drain plug is back in, simply finish removing plastic oil filter cartridge housing, and replace oil filter cartridge, very little oil will come out when pulling up oil filter from engine.

Reviving an old thread, but I'm liking that pump idea, though. Not having to buy jack stands, etc. and lay under my GC is a definite plus! $120 tops for the pump is a small price to pay for the effort it saves, not to mention the small mess I usually make and cost savings on PIG mats.

Will definitely consider this on my next oil change!

Edit: Can be had on Amazon for $89.99 with Prime, which gives you free 2-day shipping, or $3.99 for overnight. Hmmmmm.......

Jumping on this old thread.

I just purchased a Pela 650 pump oil extractor for use on an ML350 and E550. It works beautifully. Not a drop of oil on the ground, and no laying on the ground either.

So, yesterday i went to use in on my 2014 GC hemi. Sadly discovered that the suction tube will not go down the dipstick tube far enough to reach the oil pan. There is an obstruction about 2" up from the length of the dipstick. Even the smallest tube that came with the unit will not make it down to the pan.

So I ended up with oily hands and a little oil on the driveway. Rather frustrating.

Has anyone been successful pumping the pan of the 5.7 Hemi?
