The following procedures can be used when your UConnect locks up:

SOFT RESET:
This reset will retain your settings.
Hold MUTE and TUNE buttons for reboot. .

If that does nothing.... then:

FACTORY RESET:
This engineering reset will wipe all your settings.
Hold TEMP up and TEMP down buttons to access engineering menu.
When it restarts it will do so with SRT screen, and take a few minutes to get back to normal,

Please thank Snuke for the documented fix.
All I did was reproduce it in it's own thread, so it can be easily found.

I have to hard reset my unit every week, as the SD, BT and Ipod stop working.
It does not hurt to reset, you only need to setup your stations and phone.
To carry out the reboot, you need to use the buttons.

Guess I'll give both a try and see if it solves my issues. Easier than making a dealer appointment which is what Uconnect folks suggested. They said there was not a way to reset the unit myself. Not terribly impressed with their answers.

I have replaced my radio because the "media" page quit recognizing iPod, phone, disc.
However the replacement will occasionally glitch too

I read the soft reset advice...Press Mute + Browse/Enter, release keys when radio shuts down (black screen).
It didn't work. So I started messing around.
I pressed the "back" and "screen off" buttons simultaneously for 5 seconds AND IT WORKED. The system went through its normal boot up, and recognized anything associated with the media page

I took my Grand Cherokee into t he dealer after the soft reset did not work. I was a little reluctant to try the factory reset and I figured it was still under warranty. Turns out my biggest beef, which was the ease of exit feature, was not related to the Uconnect. It was an issue with the 'memory' function of the seat mechanism. Good to have the reset info though. At least that is always something I can try myself before making a service appointment.

And the issue with not being able to play my music from my phone was resolved when I upgraded to the latest software version on my iPhone and paired it again with theJeep.
