I have a 2017 Grand Cherokee that is 4 weeks old. Started it up a couple weeks ago, wouldn't go into gear. Shifter seemed locked up. Display said "service shifter". I turned it on and off several times, until it finally went into reverse.
This week it happened again, only this time the check engine light came on too. Again....turned on and off, opened doors, checked gas door etc. Finally it would shift, but check engine light stayed on. Later went out.
Called the dealership, they took my Jeep Thursday. Talked to them Friday, and they said they checked the codes etc....they checked the pins and connectors, and said they really don't know what is wrong. Now they say they ordered a connector for it and hope this would fix it.
Anyone else experienced this issue. I have a feeling I'm going to get it back and it will do it again........

Hi michele62905,

Hopefully this repair fixes the 'service shifter' message you're experiencing but please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any additional questions or concerns in the future!

Michele, I have this exact same situation with my '15 Limited Ecodiesel. Mine has the dreaded "killer" shifter that is like a toggle switch instead of traditional shifters. You still have to push a button on the shifter to move it out of park. However, like yours it will occasionally feel like it is "locked" in park and the CEL will come on. Turning the vehicle off and restarting seems to fix the problem, but the CEL will stay on for a few run cycles, then disappear. This problem has happened twice in the past few months. Mine is due for its 20K oil change, so I will bring it up to my dealer, but I doubt they will be able to fix it since it is so random :(.

Hi Mr. Plow--if there is anything at all you can tell the dealership about the conditions under which the message appears, make sure to do that. If you need us to do any follow up, we're happy to do that as well!

Had the same intermittent issue. First repair/diagnose try at the dealership was a NTF, unable to determine cause. 2 weeks later, same issue and after getting it to leave PARK, it showed an engine fault on next start, no stored codes but went to closest dealership with the engine fault active and they pulled the codes with the active fault. Took a week to get scheduled but after a day was determined the shifter control module was defective. Was replaced and TCM and PCM flashed with updates. Still waiting to see if this corrects intermittent problem. Also having intermittent stability system faults during manual downhill engine braking... hopefully this fixes this fault as well.

This same issue came up for me yesterday. I have a 2017 Jeep Cherokee Sport. As soon as I called the dealership service department, they told me to stop driving immediately and have it towed. Scared the crap out of me. I haven't found out from the service dept. yet what it could be. Definitely bothers me because is brand new.

Michele,
Did the dealership fix this issue? My 2017 did exactly the same thing today after church and am trying to find out the best solution for my car. I will take it to the dealership in the morning as the check engine light is still on. Thank you for any feedback. It is so appreciated.

See my post above - first dealer "checked" and found no problem. Took it to a second dealer who ordered and replaced the Shifter Control Module, reprogrammed TCM and PCM. Problem cleared for over a year after above was done.

I bought a 2017 Cherokee in May of last year, and recently I have been getting a " Service Shifter" message. I have to stop my car and turn it off and then restart it and usually more than once. I have contacted the dealer close to me (not where I bought the car) and they have told me that they have never heard of this issue and that they are booked out and could "try to work me in after a couple of days leaving my car there", sorry, but I have to get to work and daycare, and do not have a second vehicle to use!!

Has anyone really gotten to the bottom of this issue and what it is??

I had the same message showing and was also seeing a stability control fault indication on the display. When I checked history and the first dealer checked the stored codes there was no recorded fault. Like you, if I shut down the car and re-started, it was fine for anywhere from a week to a month. Also had two instances of the shifter not going out of Park and no lights on the shifter PDNR indicator.

The second dealer that had the car apparently recognized the issue and replaced the shifter controller, and re-programmed most of the modules (see my earlier post). Since the shifter controller and reprogramming was done, none of the issues have returned and the systems have worked perfectly.

The dealer is not doing their job, there was a service bulletin for the shifter controller which identified a defective wiring harness in some modules during the 2017 model year production run. If the dealer looks it the service bulletin history as they should have done, they will see it was a known issue.

Hello Pasqualina1979,

Hello zzcardzz,

We're sorry to hear you're having trouble with your Cherokee. I do want to note the dealership must be able to duplicate the concern in order to assess a repair plan. Are you still working with them? Send me a direct message with your VIN if an additional layer of assistance is needed.

Good luck to all with getting this resolved. Tons of cases reported to NHTSB. I now have an open case with Jeep due to this now being the 3rd time this has happened. Jeep knows about the issue and any dealer saying they don't know what it is is not worth anything. There is an issue with the wiring harness that sets of the service shifter warning and is causing all kinds of problems. If you are car is over 2 yrs old then Jeep essentially tells you you're screwed, they will not buy back the car. Mine is a 2017 with 46000 miles on it. Had I known the first time this happened it was going to be a chronic issue I would have asked for a buy back then. Now I'm stuck arguing with them non-stop about an issue that is dangerous and Jeep doesn't seem to care about. Good luck to all.

I have also had this issue 2 times. The car locks up and will not move until you turn off the ignition and turn it back on. It took several times for it to reset.

Received the Shifter Service message last Thursday on my 2016 GC Summit. had the vehicle towed to the nearest dealership and they don’t know what the problem is stating that the technician was waiting for FCA to tell them the next step. I thought all dealers had the same information since this issue is well documented.
