I'm debating to start getting rid of exterior chrome. Obviously debated between plastidip and 3m. I'm leaning more towards 3m. Primarily because i feel a little uneasy painting the pieces while on the car. Ive done paint work before on my bike, but that was easy to mask off.
I'm just curious, what are the chances that in removing the film (or if it starts to peel, or needs to be removed due to damage) that it will cause damage to the exterior chrome trim it is covering.
Anyone had any experience with removing the film from chrome trim?

Any advice will be helpful.

I've just tried put 3m vinyl on the mirrors caps. This was my first time attempting it and man it's not easy. Especially at the edge of the chrome it doesn't want to stick properly. Now I don't even know with time if it's going to peel off or not.

But to answer your question! It doesn't damage anything. I've attempted to vinyl wraps 3 times and each time I pulled them off with out any damage. That's the beauty of vinyl wrap.

On the edge of tight wraps you may find it best to use a vinyl primer to ensure you get good adhesion.

The prices of the 3M black vinyl wrap vs plasti dip is like over $100 vs less than $10.

I've been considering doing the same thing on my 14 GC, but to get the seamless look with the wrap, it takes a few big pieces, and it is certainly not cheap. I'm also not too willing to spray plasti dip on my car. I've played around with plasti dip before (did my Mustang wheels in all black), but spraying it directly on a $40K truck is different.

I'd much rather do the black vinyl wrap, but I don't know if I want to pay that much (because it might end up being way over $100 when you look at the big pieces.

Ive tried vinyl wrapped but couldn't get it all wrapped at the curves. Plastic dip I now say its the way to go, I'm not worried that I spray that stuff on my overland cuz it all peals out after just like vinyl wrap

get the 3m scotchprint in gloss black in like a 36-48" wide roll. Then you can cut the entire piece for the front and rear window instead of cutting strip from narrow vinyl and trying to work around the curves of the windows. Just cut out the basic shapes of the windows and lay the vinyl down and trim.

Thats still pretty pricey. I'm really leaning towards the plasti dip - If done right, I think it would look pretty good. If done wrong, it does clean up nicely, where as the vinyl is pretty much, do it right or spend another $100+ on more sheets.

I have granite too, I'll post pictures once I do it (maybe over Thanksgiving or something).

the problem with plastidip is it has an ugly tecture and you must use clearcoat to get ANY kind of shine.(and that isn't much) Any vinyl installer worth spit can do all windows in 2 hours and they look professionally painted.

Ya - you make a good point. I've used plasti dip on my Mustang Cobra wheels, and I do like it, but it is rough and looks obviously not stock. I'm just afraid of the price that would come along with having it professionally done. I've looked up the prices on vinyl wrap, and honestly I don't know if it is all worth it.


Tbirch, I was thinking just the window trim. You can buy the blacked out Mopar emblems, so I wouldn't try to coat those.
