Having now done 10,000km in the MY14 8 speed diesel and having also owned a 5 speed 2011 5 speed diesel I can say with confidence that the 5 speed was quicker off the mark.

Has anyone else experienced the same, the salespeople I have spoken to have told a similar story, I find the 8 speed excellent but doubt it would compete with the older 5 speed in some situations.

On another note I found the 5 speed better on sand, it seemed to like to stay in 2nd or 3rd and did it easy, the 8 speed wants to change up to far, like 6th 7th etc, this starts to labour the engine and the use of the paddle shifters is needed. Just my observations, anyone else have any comparisons?

Interesting observations. Two reasons I bought the CRD, 1. Drag people off at lights and drive on sand, looks like I'll keep the MY 12 a bit longer....

On a side note you'd be one of the first to go second generation WK2.... Know of any others?

Does that also apply when Eco mode is off, or Sport mode is on?
I notice quite a difference once you get Eco mode off, it is retarded on start off, revs too high before moving.

Same for Sand driving, sport mode help to keep it down a gear or two?

My13 177kw and 550 nm My14 184kw and 570 nm.

Driving the My 13 on the same routes as the My14 the economy on the My14
(consistent driving style) the My14 is 10-15% more economical as per brochure.
I found it impossible to duplicate fuel economy on the My13.

Cruise at 110kph at around 1650rpm and My13 nearly 2500rpm by memory,

No doubt the MY14 is quicker 0-100, MY13 2200 revs at 110 and the MY14 1850 revs at 110, yes I know it has more power and torque but it also has a lower 1st gear and a higher 8th or final gear hence the rev diff at 100 etc, I was really only talking about take off at lights etc, not a drag or any thing like that. I still think 0-40k the 5 felt more responsive.
SNUKE It is an interesting observation by you, I rarely remember to turn off eco mode so you may be right, that may be the difference, having said that its a shame if it is the difference because fuel economy in real life isn't that different.

What about shifts, I know a handful people have complained about their 8sp being rough.
Ours is silky smooth, don't even notice it most of the time.

How do you find it compared to the 5sp?
The reviews that mentioned said it was a great improvement.

Either it was alway going to have the biggest help for the 3.6lt.

People mistake hunting for roughness.
Modern cars have their gearboxes setup to get to top gear quickly, this saves fuel.
Most modern cars I have driven tend to change gears WAY more than they should.
It is all to do with sucking the last 10th out of fuel consumption test and bugger the poor car owner.
Hopefully one day we can program our own driving style into a car.

Does eco mode only change the shiftpoints? Does it have it's own set of S mode shiftpoints, or does S basically turn eco mode off?

Ive owned a Durango with the merc 5 speed and an SRT with the merc 5 speed. The ZF 8 speed in my 2014 is night and day better. Not even gonna go into who, what, where or why? The 8 speed is that much better....

Eco Off and Sport mode are different. Eco off will upshift later and downshift earlier than Eco, but not sure if they are the same points as Sport.
What is for sure different is that Sport will run along at a lower gear than Eco off. Eg, 80km Eco off = 8th gear, Sport = 7th.
If you have QL, then Eco and Sport both engage Aero, but Eco off will not engage Aero mode.

I think I will pay attention when next driving and see if the upshift are at different points for Eco off and Sport.

I think the people with 8 speeds are a bunch of Show Ponies...... I'm so jealous. I love our MY12 however I always thought that the 5sp was it's weakest point. Old school tech.

I like my old school tech. When used in sport mode I actually have a clue which gear to use though a corner _ just like a 5 speed manual. Tight uphill corner - 3rd. I like that I can feel the gear changes.

In an 8 speed, would that be 3rd, 4th or maybe 5th???? No idea.

Having said that our two others cars are PROPER manuals - both 6 speeds.

Does yours have the paddle shift?

With mine, in sport mode and using paddle shift, I can hold any gear I like all the way to redline if I want. So for me I also know what gear im in, and no nanny 'box shifting up a gear when I don't want it to.

Never used it in semi auto mode. But as my other car has a ZF 6 sp, the difference in general day to day drivability is significant. I think the the 5 sp is an OK box, just that the ZF and the inbuilt smarts make them a leap ahead.
