7,200 lbs tow rating & 720 lbs tongue weight

Just bought my 2020 Overland 5.7L 4x4 and see that it is rated at 7,200 lbs tow capacity on pg, 261 of owner's manual if it has heavy duty cooling. Pg 34 of product brochure (Overland) says as to Trailer Tow group IV, "Heavy duty cooling.'......"Standard on 4x4 models."
There seems to be some controversy as to what that cooling package consists of but there is no question that I have the 7,200 lb tow rating.
Still don't know how to set audio to come on with ignition.

I have a 2014 Overland with the 5.7, tow package, HD brakes and HD cooling. I think the 5.7 is why it's HD brakes and cooling but check your window sticker. It will show what you have and which option it came with.
Tow pack comes with the HD cooling. The Overland comes with the tow pack. Of course with that much weight you best have a brake controller and weight distributing hitch.
Do you have the window sticker? Does it list the trailer tow prep package?

Perhaps it changed in 2020, but previous years you had to get the trailer tow prep package to have all the extra options for towing and provided the highest level tow rating.

If you don't have the trailer tow prep package, then you're limited to the lower tow ratings in the Owner's manual.

The HD cooling is a radiator with a deeper core and bigger fan controlled by PWM, while the smaller fan is a two speed fan and the lower setting varies fan speed with a thermisister.... ....adding tow hitch does not give you the higher rating, whether the dealer does it or you DIY.....
Think I cured ignition on problem. Salesman had set up Android Auto to be bluetoothed while I always use cable. Designation of double pathways confused Jeep. Disabled Bluetooth in Android app with good result.
Idiot also thought it had 5,000# tow rating "on account of gear ratio" then assured me it was 6,200#s!
Read the Owners Manual, the opening line of the Tow Section.... ....earlier years open the tow capacity section with the statement to the effect of "You may tow loads of more than 3500 lbs if your vehicle is equipped with the Trailer Tow Prep Package, then have a table of max tow capacity according to the Engine and 4wd or RWD..... ....gear ratios never enter into it....

Don't trust the salesmen, I can't tell you how many times they are wrong about the cars they show me..... ....either lying, or they simply just don't know themselves.....

The max towing capacity without the Trailer Tow Prep Package has gone up and down over the years.... ....as well as what equipment is added with the Trailer Tow Prep Package.... ....what doesn't change is the brakes and transmission cooling.... ....what seems to be added is more engine cooling in the form of an HD radiator and bigger fan, that doesn't appear to be backwards compatible (but that is a guess)....

The key is, did your vehicle come with the Trailer Tow Prep Package option, that should be on the window sticker.... ....If it did, then you have the HD cooling.... ....the Owners Manuals, at least the ones I have read for earlier model years is confusing, basically hiding the none Trailer Tow Package Equipped capacity in a vague opening statement and then presenting a table for only Trailer Tow Package Equipped vehicles in the table.....

Manual p.261, 7200 #s with HD cooling: https://msmownerassets.z13.web.core..._Cherokee/P117119_20_WK_OM_EN_USC_DIGITAL.pdf

Overland Sales brochure, p. 34, Tow group 4, HD cooling standard on 4x4s: Jeep 2020 Grand Cherokee Page 34
Ok Pg 263 is the only place I can find HD Cooling, in the table for TOW Capacities..... ....if you have SD Cooling its 5000 lbs and if you have HD Cooling its 7200 lbs.....

On the salves brochure, on pg 34, it lists as "Available" the TOW Group 4 that included HD cooling.....

It is different than earlier Owner's Manuals and it does seem to confirm my speculation that the biggest factor in the TOW Capacity rating was engine cooling......

But again, I ask, do you have the TOW Group 4 option? It should be listed on your Window Sticker or build sheet....
All your references say its one or the other depending on if you have the TOW Group 4 option, which includes the HD Cooling.....

Your answer is if you have the TOW Group 4 option or not.....

The radiator is sandwiched between the electric fan and condenser/trans cooler, so its hard to see the core of the radiator. The HD and SD radiator look identical except the core, the SD radiator is 3/8" thick while the HD radiator the Core is 1" think.....

The HD Fan is bigger and PWM controlled, while the SD fan is smaller and two speed with a Thermister for the lower speed....
SD Fan
227492

HD fan
227493

Pay attention to how the Electrical Connectors are different between the two, as well, the fan motor support for the SD Fan is behind the fan, while the HD Fan they are in front of the fan.....

SD Radiator
227494

HD Radiator
227495

Pay attention to the thickness of the core, the SD Radiator Core has a noticeable gap from the core and the seams that clap to the end tanks. The HD Radiator core has almost no gap at all in the same spot.

Why is this still being debated? 2020 Overland 4x4 regardless of engine gets the tow pack.

Trailer tow includes:

Just run the VIN number on the Chrysler website that lists the options by VIN input. You will know the tow rating from the options.
IAmTodd already stated it, I missed it the first time.... ...the Overland Trim 4x4 level comes with the Trailer Tow Group 4 standard.... ...HD Cooling is part of the Trailer Tow Group 4.... ....so the OP has HD Cooling.... It can't hurt to run the VIN, perhaps it was deleted, but like I suggested he just has to check his window sticker to find it if has the package.....
Thank you for your interest. My 2020 Overland sticker does not show any tow group which is how I got started. Physically, I have the Type 4. Please consider this matter closed. I will do another posting for trans temp!
200 degrees is totally normal.

Hmmm, maybe its worth pulling a build sheet by VIN from the Jeep website. The Class 4 Hitch just means the hitch itself can handle the weight. Or open the hood and check the fan, see if you can tell the difference between the fans, look above for the photos and description of the fans. According to what Todd posted it should be called "Trailer Tow Group IV".

I remember a post a while ago, that a guy had a hitch and his window sticker mentions the hitch but not the tow package, we concluded they installed the hitch at the factory, but not the Tow Package to provide the full towing capacity. Folks also have had the dealer install the factory trailer hitch, the factory hitch is sold as a kit in the Mopar Accessories Catalog. I installed one myself.
OK, I followed up on another angle. My sticker includes Customer Preferred Package 22P. This ordering package includes Tow Group IV: http://www.wk2jeeps.com/pdf/2020_wk2_Overland_order_guide.pdf

Thanks for including the photos of the radiators and fans -- helpful to get a visual on the heavy duty cooling just to make sure. The window stickers are not helpful.

Trailer Tow Group IV is NOT listed on the window stickers of Overland 4X4 and Summit 4X4, even though it is standard on those trims. Trailer Tow Group IV is listed on the window stickers of Trailhawk, where it is also standard. Trailer Tow Group IV is listed on the window sticker of Limited when it is chosen as an option.
And just to add, in case someone is thinking about retrofitting....
It really appears, comparing the Tow Package and standard equipment and changes, the 7200 lb rating requires the HD cooling to handle the load....
The rear load leveling shocks, do next to nothing for distributing the load, in fact in some case it may distribute the load worse, not better.... ....the rear LL is just the convenience of keeping the body level..... .....you have to use hitch load distribution system over 5k lbs anyway....

Brakes, the difference between HD and SD is minor, pretty sure you get HD or SD based on what engine you got, not the tow package.... ....retrofitting HD bakes if you have SD is pretty easy and cheap, especially if you already need new rotors, you can how to's on this forum to do it....

The Mopar Hitch is the same as the factory, very easy to install.... ....remember, it being a Grp IV hitch means the hitch can handle the load, it doesn't magically raise the tow capacity of the rest of the vehicle.....

HD cooling radiator is easy, just replace the radiator, the HD radiator costs only a few dollars more than SD radiator....

The HD fan is the gotcha, its controlled totally different than the SD fan using a different wire harness, so I have no idea if retrofitting the HD is even possible or practical, definitely not if you want to keep the OEM wiring, more than $2k just for the wire harness's and one of the two is no longer available for some WK2's.... ....there is a module or solid state relay used to control the HD fan through PWM.... ....then this has to be connected the TIPM, which is going to be research project just to figure out how to connect it up, and then software configured for the fan to be controlled with PWM instead of relay control for the SD fan, which may not even be possible....
