It is in the breaking news banner, so I don't have a link, but it sounds like they decided to agree to the recall.

I guess that's good for PR.

Looks like a free gas tank skid plate for all.
Chrysler is going to supply a free tow hitch to 2004 and earlier Grand Cherokees (and the years of Liberty's affected) that don't have one. Their data studies found a significant less risk of fire from a rear end collision in those equipped with a tow hitch apparently.

Edit: Here's a link to one article about it: http://autos.yahoo.com/blogs/motoramic/chrysler-agrees-recall-2-7-million-jeeps-fix-183456236.html
Well, I'm glad their going to comply with the recall whether they really had to or not.
I have 2 qualifying Jeep GCs. 2000 and 2004.

From what I read sounds like repair is to add more structure in front of the tank, and/or to replace aftermarket hitches with an OEM hitch.

Will wait for the notification.
Disappointed with Sergio giving in.

Yes, I have a 1999 GC under the recall.

Yes, I read Chrysler's White Paper and looked at the data and charts.

These vehicles were built to standards and common practice of the day. I think it's ridiculous that they are recalling 15-20 year old vehicles.

We all pay for this in new vehicle prices that are increased to pay for this and frivolous lawsuits.

Just my 2 cents.

FWIW, according the the USA today article the recall remedy does not need to be covered by the manufacturer if the vehicle is more than 10 years out from its original in service date. You might be out of luck for a free hitch.

Not sure that is true, They were doing Recalls on Fiero Engine fires still in 1997 and the last year that car was built was 88 (all of them still qualified)

Yeah, it was in the USA today, so not sure if it is 100% accurate... But I did literally stay in a holiday inn last night (and again tonight... ):D

They didn't have to go beyond ten years but they are. The 1999 to 2004 grand Cherokees are only getting hitches if they have an aftermarket one now. If they don't have a hitch at all they are staying that way. The 1993 to 1998 are getting mopar hitches for free if either they don't have one or if they have an aftermarket one. The Liberty's are also being treated the same way as the 1993 to 1998 Grand Cherokee's. The repair is the hitch there is not extra reinforcement beyond this. It sounds like a fair deal at least if noting else the 2 groups get a free hitch out of it.
Can definately agree about the receiver particularly on a '12. When rearended by a F*rd 150 truck, the whole front end folded around my receiver and it had to be towed away, my liftgate and flipper glass still worked properly.
I was re-ended (very lightly) years back in my 2000 JGC. The receiver die-cut a perfect 2" x 2" hole in the knucklehead's front bumper. :D
Had a plastic reflector in the receiver, guess that is why the F*rd bumper folded around it.
