Aftermarket turbo coolant line?

11925 Views 48 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  SteveO90290
With the common failure of the rubber portion of the turbo coolant line, has anyone had a custom one made with braided stainless vs rubber? I feel that the difficulty in replacing this part justifies they to find a superior part vs OEM. If I can't get one made perhaps I'll slide a heat protective sleeve over the line similar to a spark plug wire protector.

OK. I'll admit to being ignorant of this potential failure point. Can you perhaps send me to a series of posts where this has been discussed?

I'm asking because my '16 has over 113,000 miles on it. It ran great until it somehow ate it's own turbocharger and injectors. Even though I'm up and going again, thanks to MaxCare, I'd like to start planning for the long haul. This vehicle, despite the flaws, is pretty much irreplaceable.

Also, I might be able to help. I spend a lot of time around hydraulic fittings and hoses. I build hydraulic test equipment for a living. Maybe there is some sort of 'hack' we could put together for this cooling line(?)

Hi Marco-Pal

Here is a link to one of the threads on this site. I'm sure that a superior line could be made. I was hoping that someone had gone that route already. There is alway room for improvement on any vehicle, but this is one that is disappointing, since it is appx 8hrs of shop time to repair.

Hopefully your shop installed a new coolant line while they were that far into it.

The other thing I have been hoping to find was an upgraded aftermarket radiator, but to no avail.

When these rigs are running well they are quite hard to beat, and it's paid for;)

This is actually a more common post among the ecodiesel facebook groups for some reason. You can search those groups for "coolant line" or "turbo" and you will see many. There are a few guys who successfully swapped in a high temp silicon piece in the place of oem line. With pics and detail too.

Thank you, I will check it out.
My dealer replaced mine with a braided line last summer after it started leaking after they worked on the egr and turbo. Not sure what exactly it was or where they got it from but he did say they no longer use the factory part when fixing that line due to the failures.

Thanks for sending the link. Wow. Looks hard to replace this hose. I'll go and ask the dealer mechanic if he replaced this coolant hose when the new turbo went in. This does not seem like a problem I want to mess with as long as I'm under MaxCare. Maybe my 'hack mechanic' experiences from past years tells me to be a bit smarter about a job that looks really hard. ha.

I am still waiting on a new EGR Cooler for that recall. If it EVER comes in, I'll request they replace this hose as well--unless, of course, they already did this.

Hi; Good idea on the 'hack', I've seen ridiculously priced OEM lines for other vehicles where people find common fittings/adapters that work.

Question about your MaxCare warranty; when I purchased one for our '16, I was told 100k miles was all I could get for the diesel. But yours is longer?
High temp silicone hose is the only hack I've seen for this failure. I know space is very limited as the one owner could only use a hose clamp on one end. Had to use a crimp style OEM clamp for the other end due to limited space.

My MaxCare was sold to me at 45K miles in April 2018. It goes through 125K miles or April 2022. The Jeep was purchased "Certified Used" in June of 2017, with 30K miles on it. Now, with the AEM, I have a bit more coverage on fuel/emission related components. All good because I'm over 113,500 miles and climbing fast.
I have a 2014 Limited 3.0 diesel. 117K miles, bought with 60K miles 2 years ago, just paid it off a month before my turbo coolant hose blew out a month ago, watched the antifreeze dump out in my driveway. Had it towed to the dealership (Falvey's in Norwich, CT).

They told me the next day that there's antifreeze in the oil, oil in the antifreeze, and engine needs replacement. I'm just out of emission warranty and have no other extended care in place. They want $12K-15K out of pocket to do it. They say I ran the coolant system dry and IT'S MY FAULT!!!! They said Jeep won't cover it at all! I find this hard to believe and really think they just don't want to deal with it. I've had issues with this service department before and contacted Jeep corporate, but they did nothing.

I actually run a garage, so I'm about to tackle it myself, but not sure with fluids mixing if the engine really needs replacing, maybe heads warped from overheating, maybe they mixed under the intake, I don't know.

I'm just sick to my stomach with this whole vehicle, everything that can go wrong with DPF, EGR cooler, etc...has!!!

Bummer, this is one of the items that really worries me. I am surprised to hear that this coolant line failure would cause the oil & coolant to mix. That seems more of an EGR or oil cooler problem, than a straight coolant line. Did you have an oil sample sent in when the EGR failed? Sorry to hear that Stellantis is offering no good will.
NICE!!!!!!

Thank you for the link

Is this the new OEM part, or do I need to buy one to bring to the shop when I get this done?

I purchased this off eBay for $300- and took it to the mechanic as he told me the genuine item was on backorder from jeep. He charged $575- to fit it... All up cheaper than the genuine part alone. Very happy with quality and so far all good...

Wowzers. I just saw it on amazon for $80.00, makes me wonder if it is bogus.

It is a genuine Dorman part with the correct number and application.
Ebay is also not the best place for parts purchasing (y)
SteveO, believe it or not but mine just popped last night. Just did the deep dive into the job and going to tackle it in pieces starting tomorrow.

I order the part. I am having a bunch of work done on my rig now. W/ 108k miles on it I might just have them do this too.

Bummer to hear, but I’m guessing it’s inevitable if we keeps these rigs for the long run. Please let us know how it goes. I’m not sure I’d be up to attempting this fix.
