2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee with Quadra Drive. So, my mechanic says I need to replace a cv joint on the jeep. I've been looking on RockAuto.com for parts and I see two things. A CV joint which is $92 and this Half shaft assembly for $43. Question Is this> is that the CV joint on the half shaft assembly? from some articles ive read, it looks like it might save me some labor just to have him yank the whole thing out rather than just tear it apart and put all pieces of the cv joint back together??? Any info or input????

What you're seeing on there is the Dorman CV joint is brand new and the Cardone halfshaft is a rebuilt unit. The halfshaft has a rebuilt CV joint on it. Cardone is a very reputable rebuilder and they change whatever parts necessary to achieve OE specs. I've used a lot of their stuff with no issues. Your right that changing just the CV is a PITA so just change the whole halfshaft,save some money and still be good as new:thumbsup:.

Very easy job to do.

Including the wheel lugs, 10 nut in total to remove, pull out the old one, whack the CV of the side shaft if you're not replacing he sideshaft, fit the new boot and CV, push back into diff and replace removed components.

Saved myself a fortune doing this myself in about 1 1/2 hours.

I'm going to order the Cardone half shaft from rock auto and have my mechanic do the work. after screwing around with the front wheel bearing on my son's focus last summer(rusted and stripped bolts), I"m totally not in the mood to tear apart this stuff on my jeep!!

Just a word of warning, ALL shops survive on parts markup too... if you KNOW he is ok with it then thats great, I would just hate for you to buy it then be told "no" when you ask them to install it. Beyond parts markup there are warranty issues, how can you hold a shop accountable for labor if you give them the part? So in 400 miles if the part were to fail, if THEY sourced the part, you bring your car to them, they replace the part free to you, if YOU bring the part that failed in 400 miles, then you get to pay them to do it again.

Just putting that out there... if you have a good thing with a shop then that is great!
