Diesel Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs to hit showrooms next month

New York — Jeep brand chief Mike Manley said the diesel version of its Grand Cherokee SUV will begin arriving in dealer showrooms in the next few weeks and could top its early forecasts.

Chrysler Group LLC initially forecast 10 to 15 percent of its Grand Cherokee sales would be diesel. "We may well have under called it," said Manley in an interview Wednesday on the sidelines of the New York International Auto Show. He thinks it could be 20 percent or higher, citing dealer and consumer interest. "We know that some of the German import brands have done a good job in terms of making diesel mainstream again."

Manley said the company is considering diesel versions of other vehicles — including the Wrangler.

"In Wrangler, the question (of diesel) is more compelling because it helps with some of the capability attributes of that vehicle. Probably not in this generation Wrangler, probably next generation Wrangler," he said. "In the other vehicles, I think it's going to be a matter of just seeing how much demand is there. I think it will be there but there's nothing like the market to confirm that."

The company is closely studying whether to add more diesels.

"The question of diesel in other Jeep vehicles is always on the table. We looked actually at it a few weeks ago," Manley said. "I want to see how Grand Cherokee is ultimately accepted by consumers. The acid test is the marketplace."

"I am confident we are going to hit the numbers," Manley said.

I saw that.

I wonder how what the Exec says versus what we're hearing form Milous can actually jive.

The Exec is saying the CRDs will be on lots in a few weeks (which I take to me 4-8), however, production doesn't start for... umm... 6.

Unless his definition of "few weeks" is like... 3 months...

Yea gotta think Milous' information is more accurate. In dealers lots in few weeks means they would already be in production and they aren't.
