I've had a Gibson cat back installed for 6 months or so and I'm wondering if it's performing as it should, or if something is weird about my setup. I had it installed and welded by a local shop, and as soon as I got in, I loved the way it sounded. But reading peoples' opinions about the Gibson, I was expecting a quieter system, not much louder than stock, with 0 drone. It seems to be a lot louder that that.

It's pretty quiet at idle. WOT is pretty damn loud though. In a tunnel at WOT it sounds ridiculous, but that could also be partially my CAI. It seems to drone in the low RPM range as well. It's the worst at just about 65mph. It's horrible being in the back seat on a long trip.

After hearing what people have to say about the Gibson, it seems like mine is behaving pretty differently than most others. Especially how everybody is saying the Gibson has zero drone. Anyone have a similar experience? I'm wondering what could be be the cause. Could bad welds have such an effect?

From what I've read on this forum, a lot of owners have this system and recommend it. I was going to buy one for my 2007 GC based on the good reviews I've read on JG, but now I'm not so sure. I too would like to hear from current owners with this system on your drone situation. Subscribing...

From the look of the system, it appears that the muffler could be rotated and put in backwards. I don't know if this particular muffler has directional flow or not. Check the muffler case for direction arrows. Maybe it was installed backwards? Other than that I don't know what would cause your system to drone while others do not.

Interesting, I'll check into the direction of the muffler.

Thanks for the input Lucas. This is my first aftermarket exhaust on any vehicle I've had, so I'm not 100% sure what to expect. When I'm on the highway at ~65, the exhaust is significantly louder than any other time. It just a low tone reverberating everywhere inside. It's not unbearable, but it's annoying. When you're in that same situation, the noise is still pretty tame?

Where in Mass are you? I wonder if I could check out how yours sounds. I've also been thinking about getting rid of the resonator because I want a bit more of a raw sound, and I've disabled MDS anyway.

If I'm around the area I'll see if I can show up for the 18th. That sounds awesome, thanks for the info.

I am using a Superchips flashpaq 87 tune right now. Could you do me a favor and look at your Gibson muffler and tell me which direction the text goes? I can't find any arrows on the muffler even though I remember seeing one before installation. Right now, the G of Gibson is closest to the front of the Jeep.

Hmm, I guess everything is normal, other than the possibility of bad welds. Maybe I'll stop by Lou's Custom Exhaust tomorrow and see what they think.

I don't mind the loudness of the exhaust, it just seems like my experience isn't consistent with everyone else, and I'm obsessing over that haha. The thing that gets me the most is the drone, because everyone says the Gibson has absolutely zero drone. Maybe my idea of drone is just different.

I didn't go to Lou's to get it installed actually. I was back home in California (in Mass for school) and had it installed by a local shop over there. I threw the Gibson stuff in my trunk as soon as UPS dropped it off. They asked if I wanted to use the included clamps or have it welded, so I went with the weld. It was a pretty small shop so I could see everything they were doing through the door - they definitely used everything but the clamps. But I don't know anything about the quality of their work.

Hmm... I've heard nothing but good things about Lou's other than just now, so that's news to me.

Myself (on more them one occasion), my father in law and a close friend had major issues with them. I will not go there again. One time they sold me a Magnaflow muffler but after it was installed I looked at it and it didn't have any markings, so I called them and they said it was definitely a Magnaflow. After some time it didn't sound right and I was not happy with it. I came to find out it was not a Magnaflow. It was Lou's version of a Magnaflow. The basically pulled the bait and switch. Charged me for one thing and installed something else. Total BS. Just be weary.

weird man, must be that location then , I go to Lou's in Brockton a couple times a year and have always received quality work from them. I just had them do a custom set of down pipes on my 5.9 and it came out sick . Sorry that you had a bad experience man

I have had my Gibson catback exhaust for 2 years and while I do have a little drone
at highway speeds, it is certainly not anywhere close to being 'unbearable'. It makes
the V8 come alive without being obnoxious or overbearing (and this is my first aftermarket exhaust on any vehicle that I have owned, so I was extremely sensitive
to anything too loud). I highly recommend it.

Hey I went to Lou's in Reading because my stock muffler had a leak and they hooked me up with their "Signature Series" 3" muffler for $40 installed so I couldn't pass that up. Its definitely louder than stock though. Ive been looking to maybe get the Gibson setup, where in Medford are you? I work at the Boston Sports Club at Station Landing, maybe stop by for a second opinion and help me make my decision? haha i'll hook you up with a couple of guest passes to the gym.
