Just curious if it has ever been attempted? If possible what issues may i run into? I have a 04 Special Edition with a currently good running 4.0, I settled because i couldn't find an overland in good shape that someone didnt want an arm and a leg for. I want to go big with this project: motor, lift, tires, etc. i previously have done swaps in tuner cars( think 300zx with a rb26-DETT(skyline gt-r motor)).

all the times I have seen this topic discussed the conclusion is always the same. It would be cheaper to trade it in for 1 that already has the 4.7. Modern cars have to much electronics on them and there is a lot more 2 it then just swapping the motor

I agree with Prestone. If you don't want to spend a year doing a motor swap then i would trade it. It would be different if you were swapping a 4.0 to a 4.0. Have you thought about just building up your 4.0? You can still make good power with those motors.

Honestly, i hadn't thought of just building it up. Is there a recommended path for upgrades for the 4.0? Are we talking chip/tune, exaust/intake, fuel system? if there was a way to upgrade and still keep similar mileage(or better), I'd be happy to save the time and investment. Any good ideas of where to start? i think i'd rather start with performance and then move to exterior improvements(i have lots of ideas there already).

On that 4.0 there are endless possibilities for performance. You can go with simple tune, intake, and exhaust all the way up to a full 4.7 stroker motor.

Go with a Golen 4.7L Inline Stroker! You can buy the Long Block on their site. It will out perform a regular 4.7 V8.

Plus the inline 6 is cheaper to build. My 4.7 Im building is way to expensive :( lol
