Hi guys, just loaded up to head South for a few days. Had the doors open and water bottles in the doors. Jumped in and hit the key to prime the aircon... then noticed smoke starting to billow out of the driver's door. It was soon apparent that the full, clear water bottle had acted as a magnifying glass to the sun, creating heat beyond the plastic's tolerance.

I reckon "it would have happened" had I not been there. Be careful peeps.

Cheers,
Steve

I think that ACA did a similar story about the same issue when the WJ's came out. They claimed that jeeps were fire hazards - god forbid that the same thing could have happened to any other car and it was the type of bottles.

Did anyone notice in the door where the drink holder is it has an imprint of a bottle in a circle with a line through it (like a no smoking sign)?
Yes, I had seen it and assumed Steve had as well but perhaps hadn't pointed it out to his passenger and hadn't noticed that said passenger had popped the bottle in there. Guessing though...?

Actually Archcat, both you and I have interpreted the symbol incorrectly. Husband hadn't noticed it and I just pointed it out to him and he says, it is saying no only to drinks with straw lids but drink bottles with caps are ok. I think he's right.

Edited to add pic:

Yep... "lids only" is the intent of the symbol. You can imagine some peanut lowering his latte glass in there

I had to laugh though. It's clearly a bottle holder guys!

Yeah well... I suppose it is - but I would never use it for such and have never in any vehicle. I always use the centre console ones for drinks. The angle of the bottle on the door panel just annoys me.

You are right though - drink bottle holder for sure.

PS - I have found it is the perfect size my 1.5L water bottles which obviously wont go in the centre console holders!! But I only put them in there for when Im driving and take them with me afterwards....

You could have had the outside of your car be melted by a building, that would have been more interesting

Funny, but really they must have crap plastic in England. I haven't heard of any loud complaining of people who parked their cars at the beach at Perth or Adelaide when they had a week of +40°C heat. But then it was England wasn't it ;)

My servo has this deal that if one buys two bottles of water each fill, they give a discount roughly equivalent to the cost of the bottles. I've given up trying to tell them I didn't come in to buy water so I just take them now. I now have every bottle holder in the car holding a bottle of water. Not a bad idea actually, for long trips.

Fits a pair of thongs nicely too!

<Insert safety message about crap sliding under pedals and jamming>
Thongs. You stash your thongs there?

Actually a hairdryer (blower bit down) stashes nicely there as well. :D

Currently though it's a nice holder for the leather cleaner/conditioner bottle and soft cloth. I often find myself parked up waiting for something to finish, be that soccer training or some other thing and I while away the time polishing. Handy to have the cloth etc close at hand. :)
