Hi

I wonder if anyone can clear this up for me.

According to WK2 Jeeps the correct Diff oils for my JGC with QDII are:

Front
Mopar® Gear and Axle Lubricant 75W-85

For the Rear ELSD, the oil specified is different.
Mopar® Gear and Axle Lubricant 75W-85 with Modifier

However, in my owners manual it says SAE75W-140 with the friction modifier for the front and because mine has the ELSD, 75W-90 (doesn't mention friction modifier) for the rear. (I would have expected that the ELSD would have the friction modifier as well).

Can anyone please confirm what is correct?

I think this was discussed on here in another thread. If I remember correctly WK2 Jeeps has the right info. I seem to recall exasperation that Jeep can't get their manual right after 5 versions or something like that.

I'll try and find that thread.

Yes, I think I did read that. However my view of the thread that it wasn't conclusive? Maybe I better have another read....

I have 2 of these. One with a 225mm rear and one with a 230mm with ELSD.

Both take 75w-85 in the front
Both take 75w-85 in the rear axle 230mm takes slip additive

I use Amsoil and have been using 75W-90 all the way around, I pulled my 6500lb boat and trailer from Boston to Illinois last summer and no issues. I have changed the fluid on my laredo (50K+ miles) 2 times now and no problems.

I have called Jeep CS about their screwy manual and I think they realize it's somewhat misleading but have yet to correct it.

Just to clarify the reason I know the 75W-85 is the correct fluid is that I was shown the Jeep service manual and they all stated that it's correct. I think the issue is centered around the many variations of drive trains they have.

You say you have a ELSD in the front of yours??? I wasn't aware they had put that up front on any of the WK2's? Might want to pull your build sheet. Should be a 195 open.

No mine definately only has the ELSD on the rear.

Re Slip Additive for the ELSD, did you just buy API GL5 oil with the modifier already mixed in and used the same for both front and rear, or did you buy it without and added it seperately only to the rear?

Appreciate your advice. It's nice to discuss these issues with others on the forum who obviously care enough for their machines to at least try and get things right.

I just downloaded the Edition 6 of the 2012 manual from Jeep US sites. They now have the all diff oils at 75W-85 GL5 , ELSD with friction modifier.

Yet the 2014 manual still has 75-W140 for the front, presented the old way, with friction modifier added etc.

Go figure.

I was confused by my dealership visit this weekend.

I have the 5.7l and was in for an oil and spark plug change (I'm at ~35k miles) when they told me it was also due to have the differential fluids changed. Looking through the manual, I can't find where it says this should changed (it states inspected), yet the page referenced in this post shows "Service A" at 32k miles. I'm assuming "Service A" means change (and not inspect), but somebody tell me if I just got taken by my dealer.

I guess it doesn't hurt to have it changed, but I specifically asked if there was any other required maintenance to keep my extended warranty intact, and they said this was due.

Thoughts?

According to the manual: At 24,000- Inspect front and rear differential fluid. Change if used as taxi, police, towing, etc. Then again at 48,000. You didn't really get "taken" per se. Unless you tow, do lots of stop n go, etc. then it really didn't need it per warranty.
It was not a bad thing to do, though. FWIW, I am at 35,000 and am going to do it at the next oil change date.

Thanks for clarifying my interpretation. I agree it doesn't hurt to have it changed, but I probably would have preferred to wait until 48k or so.

so how many quarts of gear oil does the front axle take and the rear? I assume the rear should be 2-2.5 qts, front 1.75-2 qts. Also the manual says OR EQUIVALANT.. I will buy Mobil or Quaker State. and 1 bottle 4 oz. of Mopar anti slip additive for the rear. will use synthetic gear oils front and rear.

Just to reiterate, the fluid for the rear differential comes premixed with friction modifier from Mopar now?

Jeep's advice is inconsistent. I have a May 2013 model year 2014 Grand Cherokee Summit 4wd with the Hemi. The manual says 75W-90 for rear and 75W-140 for the front diff. The latest pdf ver 8 says 75W-85 now for both. Likewise the original manual says change plugs at 30k miles, pdf ver 8 says 100k miles. So I email Jeep and the answer was use the latest manual. I call Uconnect Assist, and they say use the original manual, or if the parts department says use something else use that. Basically, we owners are left with no official answer because Jeep hasn't trained its customer service people to know.

Does anyone on this forum have a real answer to these differences?

Use the latest manual version 8. Whoever told you to use the original version manual is an idiot. 8 versions for one model year is ridiculous though and they wont send you the current one if you alresdy have one of the first seven i tried to get that already. You only get one free copy wrong or not.

The plugs are 100k for the 2014. Not sure about the oil but i would use what version 8 says
