Hi Swampy,
I have already sent paperwork in to the Government department of infrastructure and cities and have highlited the safety issue.
I have also sent an email to CJD Australia.
I have not had any written or phone contact from either of the notified parties.
Time will tell
Yes, but not holding my breath. Unfortunately we will have to wait until someone is killed and it gets some media attention before FCA will do anything about it.
And they wonder why Jeep sales have been in free-fall since about 2015......
I actually installed an aftermarket one that was about half the cost of OEM. Main reason at the time was there were no OEM alternators available in Australia and none in the U.S. and they didn't know when one would be available.
Sort of contradicts FCA's claim that alternator failure in the Diesel JGC's rarely happen so no recall necessary....
Part number looks right but I would check if buying online.
I get my parts from Moparpartsoverstock.com who will check against your VIN that it is correct. Maybe send them an email to check.
I replaced mine (MY13) before it had chance to fail. Towing a caravan, sometimes in remote areas, is an even worse scenario for alternator failure! I got hold of a Jaylec after-market unit, also half the price of OEM. Didn't want another OEM if they are that unreliable. FCA suggested I keep the receipts "in case a recall comes up", even though I replaced mine only as a preventative measure.
I agree with the opinion expressed by a few other members that FCA's 'head in the sand' attitude is due to relatively few WK2 diesels being on the road in the U.S. (introduced in 2014 in their market) therefore the failure rate compared to petrol alternators is probably very minor (and presumably not important enough!). They overlook the inconvenient truth which is evident in the number of export diesels on the road since 2011. FCA Aus are pretty toothless with h/o it seems.
