I have an 01 grand cherokee and I just changed the transmission fluid, filter and gasket. The jeep ran fine before and now the transmission does not work. I've checked all of the obvious solutions and I'm stumped. Any thoughts?

Welcome to the garage.
You say filter, so i expect that you have the 42RE transmission (with the 4.0 engine)?
Is the transmission not working in any of the gear shift lever positions?
Did you recheck that the inlet filter was mounted ok?

4.7 I haven't taken the pan off to double check yet. In letting it sit for a while with the battery disconnected so the computer will reset and hopefully fix my problem. But since the filter bolts into place I wouldn't think it would have shifted or anything

So you have the 5-45RFE transmission. This one has two filters, the oval shaped inlet filter and the round spin-on return filter.
The oval filter is mounted with one screw, but important is to install the filter neck seal first into the inlet of the oil pump. Push it in place with the butt end of a hamer or alike and only THEN install the filter neck into the seal. When you install this filter with the seal already placed on the filter neck, you have a very big change that sooner or later the seal will come loose and the pump will suck air instead of fluid.
Eventhough electronic problems can cause the transmission go into limp mode (3rd gear), it would still be driveable and also reverse should continue to work (completely mechanical input, no electronics)

Mr Marks,

There are numerous threads on this, I suggest you look around a little more. One suggestion is turning off Eco to prevent gear hold. There is a transmission reset method to relearn from new as well if you look but these guys are talking about the prior GEN 5 speed.
