Welcome to the garage. First it should not be able to start in gear, only in park or neutral.
Which year jeep and what engine?
Indeed could be park/neutral switch adjustment when it is only influenced by the shift lever position.
But since opening the door seems to have influence as well, just wondering what that could have to do with it. Does it start by only opening the door, or after closing it? The vibration caused by closing the door could do something to the park neutral switch for example.

Would the door have anything to do with that?

Not normally but then again that might just be coincidence. The moving the shift lever through the gears is what makes me suspicious of the switch. One other thing comes to mind. It could be that your security alarm is not fully releasing and refusing to allow the car to start. Slamming the door on the door jamb switch would reset the alarm.

Alarm will not disable the starter motor, but will stop the engine after a few seconds of operation.
