So I've read about every article on intake systems on this forum, and frankly there is way too much time spent on technical discussion and arguments around the efficacy of an aftermarket intake. So I'll keep it short.

I bought the K&N series 63 and I love it. Cost me just over $200 and installed it in 15 minutes. I plugged in my scan gauge II to record pre and post install intake air temps. Result- it's about the same. That said my Jeep just feels better. I tow a boat and it certainly helped. I also noticed a bit better throttle response. Did it had gobs of HP and Torque: NO. Was it worth $220?: YES.

Thanks for posting. Everyone is telling me that you can't tell the difference and it was worth it for me also!

Im in the market for a CAI and honestly can care less about the hp coming from that!...Only reason why I want one is for the look, which one should I purchase the one from mopar or k&n!?
I like the looks of my K&N.

I just picked up a 2013 GC for my wife a month ago and installed a Legmaker intake a few days ago. The Carbon fiber tube looks amazing, and it also dissipates heat much faster than a metal intake tube.

It looks good and may dissipate heat faster but with that filter being so close to the motor and having no heat shield (like the K&N's above) you'll be taking in a lot more heat.

I agree. I actually spoke to Legmaker about adding 4" to the length of the tube to extend the filter a little further from the engine. I am also going to be fabricating an air scoop that runs from behind the bumper to just under the filter to help bring some more cool air towards the filter. The hemi engine is big for this smaller engine bay, so heat soak is definitely an issue.

Any independent dynos to backup these claims?

Just because it "feels" better doesn't mean it really does. You could be getting fooled by the increase in sound.
Aside from the dyno that K&N posts...no. However, when I tow my boat up the same steep hill just about everyday, you get real used to how the truck reacts. Once I put the intake on, I no longer get a hard downshift halfway up the hill. That must equate to either more torque, HP, or simply better airflow.

As I mentioned before, I wasn't claiming a huge difference. If you don't want one, I'm not trying to convince you. For me, the sound, better looks, and slight improvement in airflow were well worth $200.

If your that concerned do your own independent dyno and report back to us.

A while back- in my Corvette days, I always switched to K&N and an aftermarket exhaust system because I thought they would give me the then advertised combined HP and torque increases of anywhere from 14-30 hp/ft lbs. Never dynoed them, but they did sound great. I realize this is a Jeep forum, so here is what I learned from an experienced and skilled tuner: instead of buying the intakes and exhausts, spend the money on your girl friend or wife (or both?). Unless you change the camshaft, the ECM is going to adjust back to factory parameters. Spending the money on her will get you a lot more performance - but- and a big but- if it(the exhaust note and intake sound) pleases you, then go for it. Dyno/schmymo- if you feel a difference, then enjoy. I had a similar experience with my 97 Grand Cherokee V8- put a then popular turbo windmill type device in the intake, and I swore the vehicle got up and ran better- just before the FCC closed the product down for false advertising. Just my opinion- I am sure others will differ. As a final note- K&N has changed their advertising to a "environmental save the planet approach by using only their filter for one million miles instead of disposable paper filters"- no performance gains offered. Nuff said- hope I added something and did not hurt anyone. Thanks for putting up with me.

Dyno pulls to back up claims of increased performance? You want prove of these "claims"........... Well that's not possible..... because that's a fantasy! :(
But that fact that a K&N or any other manufacturers oiled cotton gauze airfilters allow more dirt and fine particulate into your engine while running them, that's a proven fact!

Correct-a-mundo!!! But, will it affect your warrantee? I know the old performance "chips" were reversible- but never had to face a warrantee issue with them (Hyperchip and those types).....and they were effective only at WOT. Boy, things have sure changed.

Guys I' wasn't trying to upset anyone, in fact I hesitated even posting about my impressions on an intake because everyone always gets their nickers in a bunch on the topic.

The point was just to give me impressions to those who were on the fence, not start world war three about mediocre HP gains and microscopic dust.

We all just need to chill out and relax. (And I don't recall calling anyone names..that's not necessary).

I have been around the Ram forums for about 10 years now, and have always seen quite a few guys that talk down cold air intake kits. The reality is that they do make power if setup correctly. How many of the fast trucks and Jeeps do you see that are running stock intakes?

When the hemi first came out in the 03 Ram trucks, I went through 8 different intake setups on my truck...many of them were home made or revised aftermarket kits. I consistently dropped .2-.3 and gained 3mph in the 1/4 mile with the better intake setups alone.

I have never been a fan of K&N as they seem to always make more noise than performance, but a proper intake will show noticeable gains across the board. I will never own a vehicle without replacing the intake with a better flowing aftermarket unit.

I agree!

But to realize any noticeable gains w/a quality CAI...... improved exhaust flow to go along with that improved intake flow must be coupled w/ a good tuner to change fuel and ignition curves to suit that better breathability.

However a K&N oiled cotton gauze CAI is certainly not the way to go! :slapfight:

There are aftermarket CAI manufacturers that make real nice intakes w/superior air filters that actually filter well. For WK2 Grand Cherokees the Volant units w/the Donaldson Power core filters come to mind.
