Mopar Rock Rails - Not Happy.

Today I received the WK2 Mopar rock rails I ordered and they were damaged in shipping so the dealer was going to order a new set. After getting my hands on the Mopar rock rails (82212157AB) and looking more closely at them, I was impressed with the detail and could see how they would fit the contour of the Jeep perfectly but I was disappointed to see how thin the metal was that they are made from. My calipers measured .089 inches including the finish that is on them, which is about 14 gage steel. No way these Mopar rails would stand up to coming down hard on a rock without denting or bending.
I decided to cancel the re-order and will be returning the damaged ones to the dealer tomorrow for a refund.

Now I'm thinking that the Rocky-Road Outfitters Super Sliders are a better choice even though they leave a few inches of rocker unprotected at each end.

I really liked the look and fit of the Mopar ones, but I just can't see putting something so weak on the vehicle to protect the rocker panels since this Jeep will be frequently used on trails.

Before I commit again, I was wondering if anyone can tell me if the Mopar Rock Rails p/n 82213525AB (the Trailhawk style ones without the extra round bar) are any thicker material than the 82212157AB rails that I have?

There's a few folks on the forum who have these rails. Might want to see what they think of the performance. My rails are being installed tomorrow..not planning on sliding across rocks with mine but I do like the look

I can say from experience that the trailhawk sliders are the way to go. I've come down hard on rocks (that IS what rock rails are for not for looks) and love the reaction from people thinking I'm going to crush my door panels then they hear the steel on rock thunk and don't expect that on a newer JGC.

That's good to know. Haven't tested mine yet but hope to soon. You going trail riding with a group?

Yep coloradofourwheelers.org (also on Facebook) out of the Springs. Check us out. We do mild to wild and all makes, models and capabilities are welcome. It's great leading trails in the trailhawk with people who are just learning what their stock wranglers can handle.

Sorry, thread detour rerouting and returning you to your original course.

I've had the TrailHawk rails on my limited since day one - they are strong enough to use as a jack point anywhere along the side. Very pleased with them.

I have the standard mopar rails, yes they do bend and dent with sufficient impacts, but is under the car so you don't tend to see it. And I wouldn't want much heavier steel, I've got enough weight with skid plates, LT tyres and the like already.

The Rocky road sliders sit below the plastic sill, whereas the mopar one replaces the plastic sill, so there will be a slight difference in clearance.

I thought the trailhawk sliders are the same as the standard slider, minus the tube work.
Oh, and if you are really keen, then you can order these from Australia:

Grand Cherokee WK2 rock sliders

3mm steel, replaces the sill and can option with or without the tubing and a step.

And here are some pics of Bill's rig (Chief Products) showing some battle scars on the mopar sliders.

Where'd you get those pics from?
Impressive pics!

Let me know if your dealership installs them.
I ordered them for my 2015 and the dealer said they spent quite bit of time but they didnt fit right, called mopar parts and Mopar apparently is not offering them for the 2014 and 2015 anymore.

I was very disappointed this morning to pick up my new Jeep and no rock rails.

Haha! The skill level of dealers has dropped. Just buy a set and get a panel shop to put them on.

.

Your dealership needs its franchise pulled or the techs need to get re-educated.

Well I gotta agree with you there. My dealer has also run into issues and was unable to install today...grrrrrr. They did tell me the holes aren't lining up with the bolts.
I showed them the pics of a JGC with rails installed, and suggested they call Tech line before they give up. Not sure if the pic I had was a '14 or a '15.
I kinda got my heart set on things, and will be very disappoimted if we don't get it figured out.
Does anyone know is there any diff in the 2014 to 2015 body that might cause issues?
Can someone upload a pic of a 2015 that has these Mopar rails installed ??
Edit ...added the pic I showed them...is this not a 2015 Overland? Sure looks like it to me cause its a twin to mine ... 'cept for the rails I don't have installed yet!

I vaguely remember something recently about the rails not fitting new EcoDiesels. Do some digging and see if you can find it.

Found it:

Yeah, I read someone else was told there was a problem with the DEF system interfering with the rails, but could be BS.

The pics I posted are a MY15 hemi.

So the Mopar TrailHawk rock rails on my 2014 EcoDiesel must be a figment of my imagination. The apparition has been there for 32000 miles.....

What is the diff between the Mopar and Trailhawk rails?
Did you have the Trailhawk rails dealer installed?
