Before I bought my '13 Limited V6, I seriously considered the Cayenne. Its diesel is a member of the base line with a starting price of c. US$55K, but after I added 'essential' options such as air suspension, the Burmester hi-end audio system, the 14-way sport seats, etc., I ended up at US$87K, a good bit too much for me.

What, you passed up on the $150 key fob option?

Cheapskate.

Used to own a Porsche... oddly enough a '66 427 Impala and a '95 Grand Cherokee 4.0 both beat the Porsche for longevity and maintenance prices.

I like to think of the Jeep as just a slightly different sport type of sports car.

Since I owned a 2005 Boxster (which I sold to get the Cayenne), and still own Jeeps, I would disagree about maintenance costs. At least at the dealerships. From my own experience, servicing at Chrysler dealers is as expensive as at Porsche dealerships.

I would say that the prior two generations (pre Daimler Benz) Jeeps would last and last. Specially the 4.0 in-line six. They are also a lot less complicated than the current Jeeps or Porsches.

Oh, btw, I did not order any of those fanciful PASM and air suspension on the Cayenne. IMHO, a waste of money for most driving styles. I do agree that even if you are careful about the options, it is still around $70+. Including the $150 black out trim (what? You want chrome?)
