I never ordered a vehicle before.........

* How much of a deposit (%) is usually required to order a JGC ?

* What happens IF you CANCEL your Order because you find Exact Vehicle on another Lot before Order comes in ?

* Do you get your full deposit back ?

* Does the Dealer have to honor the Cancellation or do they usually give you a hard time ?

* What are the Advantages and Disadvantages to a Dealer when placing an order rather than buying off the Lot ?

Thanks,
Tom

I think it depends on the dealer. My local dealer is offering to order one for $1000 deposit, but I don't want to wait 2-3 months. I didn't get into details on what happens if I don't purchase the vehicle after it arrives. It seemed they wanted a premium to order verses ones on the lot. They are already offering over $3000 off 2014s overlands on their lot, but giving just invoice for the vehicle I order ~$2000 off.

Besides the wait, I'm worried the car will arrive with some defect and I'll be in a position of waiting again or living with it. If you go with one off the lot you are taking a known quantity.

We ended up giving $500 refundable deposit where we can walk away at any time. Other dealers wanted $1000 non refundable. I talked to a ford dealer a few weekends ago and he said he isn't even sure they can keep the deposit legally but I don't really know the ins and outs of that.

1. I had to put down $1000, but some dealers are doing less or nothing. They will tell you

2. You would have to talk to the dealer on that, same would be the answer to #3-4 questions. Before you order, ask the dealer those questions.

3-4. answered in #2

5. You get exactly what you ordered and just have to wait it out if you order. No one has driven the order vehicle (consumer that is).
You have you take what the dealer has on a lot or can make a dealer trade. Other people have test drove the vehicle on the lot so who knows if it was abused (I do that...hehe).

I paid a $1000 non-refundable deposit, but I don't if they can legally hold your deposit if you decided not to go through with it. I insisted with the dealer that I wanted to pay my deposit with a credit card. So worst case, I can dispute the charge with my credit card company, didn't tell them that though.

And the price we agreed upon is much lower than the "internet special" pricing they have on their website for the in-stock Jeeps. And nothing that matches what I order either, lots of Limiteds.

If your truly concerned about the Jeep then wait a few months and see if everything has cleared. No vehicle I have ever owned has 100% perfect, always some little annoyance. That is why they make warranties and dealers are close by. If I can get to work and back, I'm ok with it.

Every dealer is different. We, on the forum, can give you as many different dealer stories as we have members. You need to ask those questions at the dealer. Even within a dealership, you'll get different stories from different salesmen. If you don't like what you're hearing, ask to speak to the sales manager, they have the final word. It's all about personal preference whether you order or buy off the lot. If you're picky, order and be patient, if not find something close to what you want on the lot and test drive it. Good luck! And try to enjoy the shopping and buying experience. It's a lot of dough, and spending it should make you happy!

As jacko mentioned, every dealer is different. I emailed the GSM at the dealer I got my 2012 Overland from that I was interested in ordering a 2014 GC Summit. All I had to do was tell him what colors and engine and options I wanted on it. He ordered it in my name (it's on the window sticker) with no deposit probably because he knew me from the 2012 purchase and also knew he could sell it easily enough if I bailed out. He also knew I would only take it at invoice minus holdback.

You can order your car and get a later build instead of the ones on the lots with earlier build dates and possible imperfections or annoyances, whatever you want to call them, while no vehicle is perfect we still don't want to be spending time with our new jeeps jacked up in a service bay instead of driving them and enjoying them.

Good Point....I guess the question becomes how long to wait ?! (getting excited & impatient already)

I guess an order today will still be built 3-4 weeks from now.

How fast does the Assembly Line "react" to various problems ? For example have they started to correct any issues with the tail gate not being aligned correctly and will the 8.4 have a later version installed etc. ?

I'd have to say that if you're waiting for everything to be perfect, you'll never get a new vehicle.

Just relax. Do what is confortable for you. You are not marrying the car... you can get a different one whenever you want and as often as you can afford.

My dealer is saying 2-3 months to get the vehicle. If it's 3-4 weeks I could live with that a lot easier. Anybody know what an accurate estimate is? I'm in Oregon if that matters.

People in Oregon (wherever that is) are not allowed to order Jeeps.

You mean I would never get a New Jeep !! Plenty of other choices that seem to have much less issues - but the problem is that I really like the '14 JGC - just not sure I can deal with the issues. I am amazed at how many people just paid 40-50k for a new Jeep and are so casual with the repairs in the 1st weeks of Ownership when a new vehicle should be at it's best !!

The Jeep has to last me 6 years and 120,000 miles which is MUCH LONGER than most marriages these days !! My wife and I alternate getting new vehicles every 6 years and we both average about 20k per year. We can only afford 1 car payment every 3 years, so I would have the Jeep paid off in 3 years when it's her time to get a new one. Has worked great this way for 22 years !!

Yes, alot of GREAT & VALUABLE info here - Thanks to everybody !!

6 Years ago when I bought my MDX I swore I would never get another American SUV again. Since then we have both been spoiled by 48 month 50k mile warranty and Always getting a courtesy car overnight for any service taking loner than 1 hour from both Acura and Lexus. So still trying to figure out how to get to work if the Jeep is in for service for 3 or 4 days.

I have said it before, I Really, Really, Really Love the New '14 JGC, but not sure if I could ever cope with seeing water in my Headlights !!! So just trying to get up my nerve !!

Happy Easter !!

It's either water in your headlights or tears in your eyes when you see everyone else with the 2014 grand Cherokee and you don't have one.

Yes, you are right !! :p

Question: When does the Dealer get credit for the Sale - when an Order is placed, or when the vehicle gets Delivered ?

I was considering going back to the Dealer today for "end of month, end of quarter" but just got invited to a family event I can't get out of, so may have to wait until next week !!
