Hi guys,

Today I heard a strange noise coming from the rear axle. It is a really hard noise to describe, but its almost like a creaking of sorts, somewhat similar to screeching brakes on a bike but lower pitched. I was wondering if anyone else has heard of this before? It seemed to only happen when no pressure was applied to either the brake or the accelerator, just letting the car creep forward. Any insight would be appreciated :)

Could be a wheel bearing or the diff. I had a similar problem in my explorer and it was the rear diff. I believe the seals were bad and some of that parts were pitted.

If it only does it under load, acceleration or cruising speed, then its most likely the diff. If it does it when coasting, accel, cruising or whatever, its probably a bearing.

Edit: the noise I was experiencing was a load moan or whine. Had to turn the radio up sometimes to hear over the rear end. You might be experiencing the beginning of a bearing going bad from what your post describes. Have a dealership check it out if it's still under warranty.

mmmmmm im hoping that isnt the case, but i will get it checked out nonetheless. It certainly isnt as loud as you decribed so it could be the beginning as you say. Thanks

I have had a low speed noise for about a year. Took to dealer few months back. They said they couldn't hear it. I only hear it at 1 to 5 mph turning or stoping doesn't matter I hear it. If I pop it into n and coast it goes away so mine is def in the drive train. It's at dealership now for check engine light and I also am having my transfer case and differentials fluid changed and they are looking into noise again. Mine is 2011 with 32000 miles. Most miles are highway vacation miles. Ill post back when I hear from dealer.

They could not find anything wrong? It does seem a little better after fluid change. I'm going to guess its just a characteristic of the drive train.

I just picked up my 2014 JGC srt on Saturday. As I drove home I heard a strange noise coming from the mid to rear right side of the vehicle (my impression from the drivers seat). The noise stopped for a short period of time but then returned. The best way to describe it is when I initially start to accelerate I begin to hear it then it seems to stop until I allow the car to decelerate (take my foot off the gas) then you hear it again. The best way to describe it is that it sounds like the same sound when you take a playing card and attach it to a bicycle so that it is positioned in the spokes. I am meeting with the service tech tomorrow to take him for a drive & try to identify its source.

This sounds oh so familiar... maybe it is just normal for the drive train as bezlar suggested

Hey, any luck with the firmware flash fixing the issue Bezlar? I took mine in because of groan last week. It sounds like there is a Brontosaurus hiding in the back when you come to a stop. But we are waiting for Jeep engineering to respond and meanwhile the TSB slips out on the weekend...... good grief.

I have this same noise... Like a playing card in the spokes of a bicycle wheel.

Going to take in to dealer this week.

My first 2011 had this issue at 5mph and the dealer replaced the whole rear axle and wheel bearing and drive shafts and then the transfer case trying to get rid of this noise. It nice to see that nearly 3 years later they have a software flash out to take care of the problem.

K950 - Were you able to get this repaired? I took mine to dealer and the sound isnt happening as it's intermittent -- the service techs cant replicate the issue.

Was the dealer able to identify the cause of noise for you?

Sorry for the delay. The day I was taking it to the dealer it stopped. Not a sound. Called the dealer & told them no reason to come by. Since then I haven't heard a thing!

You know funniest thing.... The day before I took mine to the dealer mine stopped making this noise... Since then it can't be replicated.

I guess it's just something to do with break-in period?
