Well gents, it was bound to happen sooner or later:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Jeep-Grand-Cherokee-SRT-8-SRT8-rear-fog-lamp-harness_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem2c52542cc3QQitemZ190359809219QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

Based on his history, looks like he's been doing this for a while, too. I know the guy. He contacted me and asked me if I could give him some help on building one. He PROMISED me that he wouldn't go out and start competing with me, which is exactly what he is doing now. Harness looks to be of inferior quality, but who knows.

This may well be the end of my rear fog harness days. I didn't expect it to last forever, but I didn't expect it to end this way either.

So I confronted the guy via email and this is his response:

Jason,

Hold on, I am not screwing you at all. If I were buying them from you and selling them at a higher cost (and taking the credit for construction) I would understand your point. However, I decided to try out the EBay angle since the forums are off limits and I constantly get emails from people who want them. I have NEVER bad mouthed you or tried to tell people that these harnesses were my idea. I don't use your pictures and have found different vendors for my supplies. I take full responsibility for each and every harness I sell without involving you.

I should have never contacted you in the first place since I basically knew what was involved in the construction of these harnesses but did not know the values of the resistors. Your were more than kind and I am sorry you feel that I have taken advantage of you in some way. I should have just started experimenting with different values and figured it out myself.

I took your idea and suggestions and revised them a bit in the construction and decided to see what happened. They sell faster than I can make them so please feel free to jump on board the ebay train (if you know what I mean). In addition, I had to spend some money on bulk plugs, heat shrink, solder, etc and I didn't want to be stuck with all of that raw material.

Please remember, I have only started to sell these since they are such a great idea and everyone who buy's them loves the results. I do make a profit on them (as do you) but they take me almost three hours to construct and test plus I really don't have a ton of time to be constructing harnesses and shipping them all over the world.

Also, it is just a matter of time before someone else takes one of our harnesses, tears them apart, and starts constructing and selling them under their own name. I have had countless people ask me how to make them and I turn them down. I DO NOT provide anyone with instructions on how to put these together. That is just the business side of me coming out I guess.

I hope you understand. I don't want to have a war between us. I would prefer to work together rather than against each other.

"The business side of me..."

LOL, he's a real business man. I guess sniping people's ideas and then marketing them as your own, all while lying to them to get them to tell you how to do it constitutes good business these days. Whatever!

have you tried to sell it on ebay or just forums?

That is interesting though he asks you how to make them and then doesn't want to tell anyone lol

That sux Jason. he def stole your IP.

i just saw a post on the red site where someone mentioned this guy selling on ebay....... maybe you got the same tip-off.
A guy tipped me off like 2 weeks ago saying he thought he saw one on ebay. He asked if that was me and I told him it wasn't, but neither one of us could find the listing again.

My informant sent me another email today with the link to the listing. I found it and his ebay username was identical to the email he used when he emailed me directly.

have you tried to sell it on ebay or just forums?

That is interesting though he asks you how to make them and then doesn't want to tell anyone lol
I have only sold it on the forums. I didn't think that ebay would be targeted enough to get any business. I suppose that now that I am a little more well known, people are going on ebay to look for them.

Here's another tidbit from our earlier email correspondence where he asked me to provide him with the nitty-gritty details. I saved ALL his emails:

"If you wouldn't mind helping me out I would really appreciate. Also, I WILL NOT turn around and start selling my own harnesses or instructions to other people. I don't do things like that."

sorry mine wasn't more timely. i really thought I sent it to you earlier......
Don't beat yourself up Rob. There's nothing I could have done anyways. He's trying to tell me that he thinks his business practice is totally legit. I guess that's the last time I help anyone!

*****LATEST UPDATE*****

So, I've been corresponding back and forth with this guy (he generally goes by the screen name 'copout221') and his latest offer is to raise the price of the harnesses on eBay and pay me the difference as 'reparations'.

I told him where he could stick that idea.

I told him the only way I'd be satisfied is if he was to fully cease and desist any sales of MY product design that he stole. He has yet to reply to that email.

Do you guys think I am being unreasonable with this???

What an ass. He doesn't know any other way of making money and yet steals ideas from other people. He has no life. He doesn't have the brains for this. YOU DO JASON! Hopefully it will come to an end. Give him bad rep!

Thanks for all your support with this guys.

I was just making sure I wasn't flying off the handle and being a complete lunatic about this. I mean, I told him upfront when he was asking me for info that I didn't really feel comfortable giving him any details on my harness. It wasn't until he promised not to build them in competition that I relented.

Anyways, the success he is enjoying on ebay is a direct result of my hard work. I've already had 3 people email me today and ask me if I am the guy on ebay. I never thought to sell them on ebay because I didn't think the audience was focused enough. Now that I am a little bit more well known, people are looking on ebay for my harnesses.

BTW, if you guys are displeased with his business tactics, feel free to drop him a line at [email protected]. His name is Ken Rydz.
