What year is the Cherokee so this question can be moved to the relevant forum discussion area?

Thanks...as that's a different vehicle than a Cherokee. ;)

Whatever Jeep that is i'd take a careful look at the most rusted areas to see how much metal is gone.
A power wire whee, rust reformer or equivalent and penetrating oil could be that Jeep's best friend.

I am considering buying a used Jeep Cherokee - any major concerns about the rust in this picture? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
Looks not that good to me at all, mine is a 2014 but in Vancouver Canada with not much salt and the area of the picture shows no rust at all on mine...
This looks like an East Coast vehicle and that is what it is I'd say... eventually everything will rust...

Is this a fantastic deal or gift from a family member?
I hate rust especially on unibodied vehicles. Plenty of boxed structural steel that is difficult to repair once rust cancer starts.
Shop around your looking at the best selling suv no need to buy one you don’t feel great about.

if it was a steal of a deal….
I would use a rust converter chemical spray on it. This will inert the rust chemically.
then I’d spray it down with a wax based oil penetrating rust proofing solution.
It is hard to tell from the photos just how bad it is.

Bring a plastic tab removal tool, and peel back the wheel liners. Have a look what’s going on in there.
I wish I had done that on my Duramax… she was sold after I seen what I was up against….

Here’s the inside of my door after being rust converted
Turns it black and is ready for paint.

That’s a lot of surface rust for a 10 y.o. Jeep. My 14 year old Jeep had a lot of rust, too, (we get lots of road salt!) but there wasn’t pitting on the heavy parts of the suspension like is showing in the picture. You would have to be thorough when checking the body to be sure that it is not compromised, that would be my concern.

Just took a picture of my 2014 WK2 with 141,000 miles (221,000Km), never done anything but frequent garden hose in the winter, spraying everywhere... as long as it wasn't freezing ;-)

Its a different picture altogether....

Wow - garden hose did the job! That looks better than 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee that has been in New England as well that I took a look at the undercarriage today.

...buying out of state would be a good option... I was thinking of selling My2014 Limited but still looks good, and not worth a lot, WL too expensive...so I will keep driving...
Looking at 2024 Mazda CX-70 next (I think)...for reliability and fit & finish reasons...
Last couple years I meant to the replace the 2014, then came COVID, now the prices are too high ;-)

A lot of times rust can be superficial. Look under a diesel truck with 300,000 miles… they look terrible but then they run for another 300,000.

if it were my money, I would spend a bit more to get a clean one and then I would take the steps to keep it clean.

I was in a panic to buy a vehicle and bought a 2002 Nissan Xterra 4x4 with extensive rust underneath. the problem will show up when start replacing parts and the bolts and nuts are rusted. Pass on Cherokee
