Have had my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland for a little over a month now and love it so far. I ordered without a a CD player and use the SD Card. A few weeks ago I prepared the SD Card, have about 600 songs on it and it has worked like a charm and really I like the feature. Today, I get in the vehicle, hadn't used the SD card in a few days and turn the radio to that feature and nothing. The system recognized the number of songs but I couldn't tune to a song or play a song and couldn't "browse" for anything on the SD card. No Media Available displayed every now and then on the screen. Needless to say, took out SD Card, put in the SD card, took out SD Card, vehicle off then back on etc. and still nothing. Right now the Jeep has been sitting off in the garage and I am going to go and try again. I put the SD card in my laptop and it played the songs no problems. Any thoughts or another gremlin?

SD Card Now Working

Ok...here is an update. It is now working but didn't after I had let it sit and popped the SD back in. I looked at some of the naming convetions of the Albums and Songs. I found that some had copied to the SD Card with "_" underscores. I took those out AND renamed the SD Card. Working beautifully! Who knows if it was the underscore or the rename of the SD card but all seems to be well.

Interesting, I'll be doing the SD card thing this week. So, what do think happened? I would guess that renaming the SD card had it see it as a new device. What if you don't name it at all?
I honestly think it was the underscore in the song name. I think had I not renamed it, removing the underscore would have corrected the issue. Good luck with your SD. I honestly think it is a really cool feature!

Something I and others have done that seems to help. After loading your SD card lock it before using in your Jeep.

Have you guys been just dragging and dropping songs to your sd card or have you been creating folders like jazz,rock..etc and then clicking on those individual folders? If you hit shuffle will it shuffle through all the songs or just one folder at a time??

I use folders. You can shuffle genres and artists by using the VR.

I have over 1200 albums ripped on my home PC / server in FLAC. I have everything from 16bit/44.1kHz CD to 24bit/88.2kHz SACD to 24bit/176.4kHz vinyl rips. I will not listen to compressed audio in any form. I tried converting some 16/44.1 FLAC files to ALAC / m4a but could not get the Jeep to recognize them. I then converted them to Windows Media Audio lossless / wma using Microsoft Expression 4 and they play beautifully. I've been testing using an old 4GB SD card without any issues (once it was formatted in FAT32). I have a 32GB Transcend SDHC card coming from Amazon. Once in hand I may try a few 24bit files to see if the Jeep will play them. I love the convenience of the SD card player.

I tried that at first, but the mixes got kind of weird. Christmas, classical, rock, and jazz, with some blues and other assorted genres. I now shuffle folders of them individually.

Yes, I need to set up genre folders so to speak. Right now on my ipod, I just have folders of artist, and i need to put them in folders for classic rock, pop, etc. any reason I can't leave the artist in folders inside, say like a classic rock folder?

I took my artists out of their folders and just dropped the albums in the genre folders. I think this may have eliminated a step in searching.

I hate to confuse the issue...but just keep in mind that you cannot currently use "shuffle" mode within a folder. It's either a bug or a glaring oversight, depending up how you view it. You can select "browse", then "artist" or "genre" or "playlist" or any of the other choices and use shuffle within the resulting set of tracks, but not so for "folder." You can even do multiple level queries, such as "genre", then "artist", and shuffle mode will work within the resulting set. But, again, not within a simple, user defined folder. So, to me it's a bug. This was not addressed in the most recent update.

By way of example, let's say you drag 250 songs into a "rock" folder on your SD card, but let's say there are 1500 songs on your SD card. If you select "browse", then "folder", then "rock", it will play whichever song you select initially, then continue on in order if you do nothing else. Song count will show "x of 1500" and "x" will depend upon where that specific track is located relative to the other 1499 on the SD card. Skip to the next track and you'll get the next track in the "rock" folder, but in reality, you are just getting the next track on the SD card as a whole. Song count will show "(x+1) of 1500". But, hit "shuffle" and it shuffles the entire 1500 songs, and the song playing will show as 1 of 1500. Skip to the next track and it will be a random choice from the other 1499, not just "rock." Might be "rock", but the odds are 5 out of 6 (1250 of 1500 songs are not rock) that it will not. I hope this is clear enough.

Once this bug gets fixed, NONE of what follows will be necessary. BUT, until then, you must either scrub and consolidate your music's TAG data, or you need a workaround. Or, you just need to be prepared to have "Y.M.C.A" come up at random right after "Back in Black".....If you have a large collection and it is anything like mine, you will have countless different genres listed on different albums that you might all consider to be "rock." "Classic Rock", "Acid Rock", "Hard Rock", "Rock", "Metal", etc. I personally have found it to be too time consuming to try and consolidate the number of genre's used in my music collection, as it is a very tedious process using a TAG editor.

Others might just use smaller SD cards and have a "rock" SD card and a separate "jazz" SD card and so on. It certainly works and is easy enough, but I don't like swapping them in/out.

I use playlists as my workaround. I have a 16GB SD card with approx. 2000 songs on it, set up in 9 different folders that correspond to different playlists. For each of those 9 folders, there is also a corresponding playlist file (.m3u) on the SD card. To continue from the previous example, I have a folder, such as "01-Rock" on my SD card, and it contains everything I consider to be "rock" (in my case about 450 songs, selected without regard for the actual "genre" tag). I can then select "browse", and instead of selecting "folder" and "01-Rock", I select the "playlist" and "01-Rock". I then select an individual track to begin. If I initially select the 10th track on the resulting list, the song count will show "10 of 450". But, if I then hit "shuffle", the song count will change to "1 of 450". Skip to the next track and I get another one of the songs from my rock playlist at random. Works as it should. No danger of my daughter's music getting mixed in with my AC/DC.

I use iTunes and an iTunes script that I downloaded to accomplish this. Once you set it up, it will export the music files and associated playlist file directly to any destination you specify, such as the SD card. Works like a champ.

I'm going to have to retry parsing that at the beginning of the day; by this point in the evening my clients have numbed my brain and I need a reset.

I'm starting to set up my initial SD card to have ready for the day-1 drive home, but I find the official manuals pretty useless.

What codecs does this beast support?
