Stop/Start Not Ready-Battery Charging message.....I know this has been discussed before but was wondering on the highway last night it showed 14.3 volts. Is that normal or kind of a high? (45-minute drive at 76mph) The Jeep is still under factory warranty so I'm gonna make an appointment to have it checked this week. ....I need to go to the dealership anyway to find out what's taking so long on getting a new radio over the delaminating screen issue.... It's been almost two months since it was ordered. I recently picked up a new front plate I guess it has two meanings

The message is advisory, not a warning of something wrong. The batteries charge state is accessed and if there is not enough charge the ESS is turned off to allow the battery's to charge up. Cause while you use the ESS it drains the battery's while the engine is off.

The WK2 has smart charging, its using computers to access the battery's state of charge and adjusting charging voltage accordingly, to charge the battery as quickly as possible but not to overcharge it, which greatly decreases the battery's life, especially AGM battery's. I.E. the charging voltage goes up and down according the battery state. 14.3 Volts sounds normal, especially in cool or cold weather.

In the past, there was a battery temp sensor, and charging system voltage was varied according to the battery temp to prevent overcharging the battery. You would see the system voltage change with temperature, going up the colder it was. Now, you will see the voltage change several times in a minute or not at all for hours. All depends on the charge state of the battery.

If you drove 45 minutes non-stop on a highway, that should have fully charged the battery. Did you get the message after that trip? If so, then I would suspect you might have a battery problem, one of the two batteries, you have a small auxiliary to be used for use when the engine is off while at a stop. If you got it before the trip and it hasn't come back, it might be perfectly normal.

Yes, since FIAT took over, there has been a shortage of parts, it was far worse at first then it is now. FCA burned many bridges with customers when they left customers vehicles sitting in Dealer lots waiting up to 6 months for parts to repair them.

Thanks for all the great info. It was a two way trip about 50 miles each way, all highway with 5 hour layover. The charging message was on going and coming home. I just took a short ride and it's still indicating battery charging....

Yea, sounds like something might be wrong. Those are clearly conditions the batteries should be charging and not draining, yet the message is coming back saying ESS is unavailable because the battery is still charging after it should have easily been fully charged.

There are a lot of cases of the auxiliary battery going bad early. A bad battery won't charge well.

My start stop worked great until last winter. Then it stopped. Always said waiting to warm up then it would go to waiting to charge. Once winter was over and it started warming up it works all the time. It will probably happen again this winter.
As for your delaminating screen, buy a screen protector once you get the radio replaced. Same thing happens to my last Jeep. When I got my GC last year, the first thing it did was buy a thin glass screen protector from Amazon. Best 10 bucks I ever spent. You can’t even tell it’s there and the screen works perfectly like before.

There are a lot of cases of the auxiliary battery going bad early. A bad battery won't charge well.

I'm bringing it in tomorrow morning will keep you updated!

UPDATE: Dealership fixed issue under factory warranty (see work order) Stripped battery post, corroded and shorted out batteries. Very odd vehicle is only 24 months old. Both batteries were replaced.

They got me a new head unit in less than a week, just a few weeks ago.

Not sure why ... the old one was perfectly fine after three years, and I didn't baby it.

But then I've never put a screen protector on a phone either, and never felt the need for one. They always remind me of my high school girlfriend's mother who kept the plastic covers on all her furniture and lampshades.

They ordered it Sept 30th. I also went to the parts dept to find out the status (I don't believe these service writers) They could tell me nothing only that it's on order!

Ya mine was perfectly fine the first three years. Then after the warranty was up it started peeling and flaking badly. I traded it in that way. When I got my newer GC last year the screen protector went on the day after I brought It home. You can’t even tell I put it on.

I'm going to make an appointment tomorrow to take mine in for this. The ESS would occasionally say that the battery is charging but usually after driving 35 minutes to work it would be ready to go. It has been charging for the past two weeks.

I have about 600 miles left on my factory warranty and, although I have MaxCare lifetime coverage, I want to avoid a $100 ded. payment to get it fixed. Plus, I found out one time that even when things are still covered by the factory warranty my MaxCare plan kicks in with a free rental vehicle if they have to keep it overnight.

It seems to be within the screen, not sure if any kind of protector would make a difference. That would just prevent scratches etc. There is another thread about this issue and it seems the 17's and 18s have this problem. It's my understanding this issue was corrected on the 2019 and up models.

That does look a little different. I’m used to seeing a flaky patchy peeling On the outside surface. That looks like some layers are separating.

According to some other posters it's caused by heat. Supposedly they are now using a thicker glass or changed it? A few owners say there units were replaced using the same glass while other said it was replaced by a thicker glass screen? Who knows........
