Stop/Start Not Ready-Battery Charging

Stop/Start Not Ready-Battery Charging message.....I know this has been discussed before but was wondering on the highway last night it showed 14.3 volts. Is that normal or kind of a high? (45-minute drive at 76mph) The Jeep is still under factory warranty so I'm gonna make an appointment to have it checked this week. ....I need to go to the dealership anyway to find out what's taking so long on getting a new radio over the delaminating screen issue.... It's been almost two months since it was ordered. I recently picked up a new front plate I guess it has two meanings :sneaky:

According to some other posters it's caused by heat. Supposedly they are now using a thicker glass or changed it? A few owners say there units were replaced using the same glass while other said it was replaced by a thicker glass screen? Who knows........
I’m wondering if because of this issue this is the reason they switched to the newer flush mounted screen in 2019.

I believe they just changed the bezel. The radio and screen are the same.
Yea, sounds like something might be wrong. Those are clearly conditions the batteries should be charging and not draining, yet the message is coming back saying ESS is unavailable because the battery is still charging after it should have easily been fully charged.

There are a lot of cases of the auxiliary battery going bad early. A bad battery won't charge well.
I just had my 2019 Overland in two weeks ago for its annual oil change and checkup. I told them about my similar problem. Stop/Start quick working several months back - shows that "battery charging" display. Otherwise it starts and runs fine. Never had a problem with a sluggish start. They did a full workup on the charging and battery system. Ended up replacing both the primary and Aux batteries and also the electronic component that monitors battery status. So even though it is sorta nice to have that Stop/Start system fail and quit working (I don't really like that "feature" on my Jeep) when it does go out it is an indicator that something is possibly seriously wrong. Get it fixed.

I don’t know if I’d say it could be something serious. The only purpose of the secondary battery is the stop start feature which almost everyone here hates.
its widely known that those small batteries last only two years. Give or take a year.

Whatever it was turned out to be serious enough that it wiped out the main battery as well and also the battery sense module (the tech said that's fastened to the top of the Aux battery). Fortunately they replaced both batteries and that module under warranty. They said they did a battery analysis (partial discharge followed by a recharge) and the Aux was just about completely gone and the main battery was only holding at 68 percent. Dunno what caused the problem but I'm glad all that stuff has now been replaced. The AGM type battery in my last (2011) Jeep was still going strong at the 8 year point when I traded it in on the 2019. I was hoping the problem with this one was just the Aux battery but it turned out to be much more significant.

Yes you have a good point. But it’s not common for the Main agm to go that soon unless something caused it. The secondary battery does not last at all. pretty much everyone eventually has issues with it. It’s such a poor design and useless feature.
My last Jeep as well had a 7 year old agm still going strong when I traded it last year as well.
I dropped my 2018 HA off this morning because the ESS system was showing a constant "Battery Charging" status for the past several weeks. Even though I usually turn that feature off when I start the engine it's nice to have it available whenever I want to use it.

After 6 hours they called and said it's ready to go. They found battery cables loose and both batteries still tested bad after tightening everything. They replaced both batteries and also the IBM sensor, whatever that is.

They also found some stored codes that did not show up as faults on the IP. Something about a park sensor shorted to ground, left headlamp relay control and park assist signal. There is apparently a related Star Case s1808000017 about it. After removing the passenger side kick panels they found three loose pins in a connector. That was repaired, bcm reset, cleared learned adaptives, test drove and all was well.

I had around 650 miles left on my original 36k mile factory warranty, so it did not cost me anything. The service advisor said that my MaxCare lifetime warranty would not have covered the battery replacements. I'm glad I had it done now.

So does this make sense? They said they tested the batteries and they were shorted/ removed and replaced (also shows new batteries in description).....Then continued testing and found the charging voltage was below threshold, then inspected wiring and discovered the stop/ start battery was corroded as well as the positive terminal being stripped! Wait in the sentence before it says batteries were replaced???? So how can there be corrosion on a new battery and a stripped terminal. Then he wrote the corrosion was cleaned off re-threaded the positive terminal and worked properly. Am I missing something here?

I'm going to make an appointment tomorrow to take mine in for this. The ESS would occasionally say that the battery is charging but usually after driving 35 minutes to work it would be ready to go. It has been charging for the past two weeks.

I have about 600 miles left on my factory warranty and, although I have MaxCare lifetime coverage, I want to avoid a $100 ded. payment to get it fixed. Plus, I found out one time that even when things are still covered by the factory warranty my MaxCare plan kicks in with a free rental vehicle if they have to keep it overnight.
Just had my start/stop replaced after getting the message at 29k. Unfortunately out of warranty. 334 bucks for diagnostic test and battery.

That’s a ridiculous price for something that is so easy to change yourself. Did they change the main or start/stop battery? Or both?

Just stop/start. 125 was diagnostic test. Yes it was ridiculous but was working long hours that week and didn’t want to mess with it. I usually change them myself.
This post had me curious this past weekend on what condition my batteries are in. Upon inspecting I noticed the vent tube was not plugged in to the aux battery. All the terminals and mounting brackets were tight And nothing was stripped. A volt Meter showed the two batteries were 12.23&12.17 volts before starting. And 14.53&14.61 volts while running.

It’s worth taking the time to check under the battery cover to see if everything is ok.
I’m literally sitting at the dealer. They are replacing both batteries under warranty. Crazy how flawed these systems are. My Jeep only has 17k on it!

Makes me wonder if this is gonna be an every 2 year problem. If you notice on the main battery it says 36 month free replacement! Keep us updated on what your repair says.....

Prety much every battery comes with a minimum 36 month warranty. That doesn’t necessarily mean they will not charge to swap out the free replacement battery.
One important thing I noticed in your pic is that the replacement Mopar battery is made in China. When they replaced my battery last year (with 18k miles on it) they replaced it with a American made Mopar battery.

Yeah it also has a date of 2019 on it!
Update:

dealer just called, said they replaced the Aux battery. I made sure to ask them about corrosion, etc. They said the main battery is fine, but the Aux battery was def dying. So we will see how long this new battery lasts.
Mine was doing this as well. 2019 GC with only 18000 miles. Dealer called to tell me it was done, and they had to replace both batteries. Frankly, I didn't notice the problem until the gas prices shot up!
Same problem. Battery not charging. Hasn’t affected anything as of yet, hopefully it stays that way.
