I am looking to attach a trailer hitch to my 2014 Grand Cherokee Limited RWD. I was told that it is already prewired for a trailer hitch.

I contacted both Uhaul and my local dealership. Uhaul quoted me $270 for hitch, wiring, and install. The dealership quoted me $241 for just the hitch and than another $271 for installation.

My two concerns are:

1) Appearance - With the Uhaul hitch, will it look like a uhaul job (blatently an aftermarket accessaory) or will it look as though it comes from the dealership.

2) Resale Value - Is one option better than another in terms of resale value or even warranty?


Any insight or if anyone has any photos of Uhaul trailer hitches on their '14 Grand Cherokee I would greatly appreciate it!

From what I understand a jeep dealer can install a OEM hitch and the OEM connecters (2) for the lights/ brakes. I believe the electrical for the trailer connection is prewired into the Jeep.
I believe they should give you 2 different electrical connecters. 1 for just lights and the other for lights/brakes.
If you need brakes also, you can add the controller in the future.
Being a 2014 Grand Cherokee (a hot looking one at that) I would invest in getting the OEM Tow hitch and wiring connectors for appearance and correct functioning.
Have seen the U haul hitches and do not like the appearance.

The aftermarket hitch is going to be down below the bumper, rather than integrated with it as the OEM is. Even with some extra cost, I'd surely opt for the OEM hitch install, especially since you're already pre-wired. The dealer will have to, um...deal...with the programming to turn on that wiring in either case, unless you want U-Haul to just cut-into/splice-into your wires. With the OEM wiring, you may also have the plug for a brake controller up front and that's a nice thing to be able to use.

Do note that non-factory/OEM hitch will also result in a lower towing rating.

Did Uhaul quote you a Class III or Class IV hitch? The OEM version is a Class IV. I personally would pay more for the dealer to do it.

I would go with the dealer installed OEM without even thinking twice. Those aftermarket ones that hang down below look like total crap and I have seen many covered in rust after a few years.

I have decided to go with the dealer install. Its a safer bet all the way around. The final price they ended up quoting me was $441.64 for the hitch and install. They also said there was the ability to get the electronic brake wiring kit for $108 but I am not planning on hauling too many things after my move so I am passing on it for the time being.

Ill be sure to post photos once the install is complete but that probably wont be for another week or two.

I've been going through the same questions about a hitch. I'm having the OEM hitch installed Monday, along with the black Mopar front tow hooks, on my 2014 GC Limited. Looked at other options, but just wanted a clean look, and the dealer worked with me on the labor pricing, since I had recently bought the car there. If they charge shop rate, the installation price is quite a bit higher, but they know it doesn't really take that long. Sometimes if it is the dealer you bought the vehicle from, they cut you a break.

Also the wiring harness to be activated by a dealer that's how they get ya. they have to tell the TIPM to send power down the line.
