Hope this isn't blasphemous to ask in a WK2 thread - but just wondering for folks who decided to buy the 2014 JGC, what other vehicle (if any) were you close to buying instead - and what was it about the JGC that put it over the top. And lastly, would anyone flip to their 2nd choice if they could, and why?

Second choice was a 2013 JGC.
I specifically wanted a beach capable, not too big, cross over/SUV. There aren't a lot of choices. Land Rover might have been a choice today, but I couldn't shake the memories of writing damage estimates in excess of $3,000 for LRs that couldn't stand up to a New York City pothole.
Now, it's true that it was a long time ago. It is also true that a NYC pothole can be worse than anything off roaders ever encounter. But the memories linger of mangled suspension and undercarriages.
No real regrets on the Jeep.

Ford F150, but in the end it was way too big and not too parking space friendly.
The other deciding factor was the quadra drive II. I kept coming back to how great my 2008 Commander Overland drove in the snow and the fact that there really isn't anything out there at this pricepoint that was comparable. Living in Colorado this was a must have which in the end made my choice relatively easy.

I was leaning towards a Audi Q5 or possible a Range Rove Evoque...all had similar options and the Evoque( I know but there is one in the neighborhood and it is really sharp) was comparable to the Overland CRD in cost...Q5 a couple thousand more.
From there it was an A6 TDI

Land Rover LR4. Close to the GC Overland in cost capability and price. Unfortunately
closest dealer over 40 minutes away WITHOUT the flood detours.
Range Rover Sport SC. Tad pricier. Not as good a buy. Demo's electronics looked like UConnect's castoffs.
Cayenne. RUFKMe on those option prices?
Toyota 4Runner. Last century's SUV.
For NYC streets, you need an old "iron" Volvo or Mercedes with tactical grade tires. Or an old Buick Roadmaster with 2 tons of chromed bumpers. A few strategically placed impacts with a big hammer could also help convince the cabs you are NOT to be trifled with--recoilless rifles being forbidden by local constabulary.
She who must be obeyed liked the idea of a ML350 (diesel). I personally was leaning to a CRD but I don't drive enough to justify the upcharge for diesel. the actual difference, for me, between the Summit CRD and the Summit V6 after negotiation was almost $6k. I guess they don't deal enough on the CRDs yet 
However, I've had my V6 for almost a month and love it and I'm getting between 19 and 20 MPG on $3.13 low test driving back and forth the train station and 2 trips to PA for Grand Kritter events.

I had an appointment at the local Toyota dealer to look for an FJ Cruiser the same morning I bought my Overland. the FJ was cheaper and still very off road capable. However, I was not impressed with my last Toyota and still bitter about the $3,600 in repairs for that 4Runner, and was bowled over by the features on my Overland---Toyota gives nothing in terms of luxury features or "gee-whiz" options, and certainly not any discounts, treating customers as if this was an honor and priviledge to throw our money at a toyota dealer for their "vaunted" reputation. The Toyota also does not offer a dedicated 4x4/AWD, no V-8 5.7 smaller than the Sequoia/Tundra, and just looks like a Transformer toy.
But I took a chance on Jeep-hey, that's why I have SUCKER branded on my forehead, right?

A used 2004 GC. Seriously considered it. I loved my 2002.
I didn't like anything else out their. All the "Cross Overs" can't tow squat. And anything else that tows as much as the Jeep is Full Size (Expedition, Suburban, etc.).
Couple that are close to Jeep GC, like the big VW SUV, is extremely expensive and terrible MPG. We already have one VW in the family too.

2012 Audi S4. I wasn't necessarily in the market for an SUV, but I've always had a soft spot for Jeeps, as I learned to drive in a JK, and went off roading with my dad a lot as a kid. The diesel is what put the GC over the top, I've always wanted a Jeep with a diesel. If the Wrangler came with a diesel, I might consider that as well, but as I will be commuting in it as well, the GC would still probably win.
The S4 is still on my wish list.

Honda Pilot was a distant #3, but couldn't get with the box design. I also entertained the Infiniti jx but I was underwhelmed and it was a bit boring. ?(Thank goodness I didn;t with all the recalls). Audi q5 was the runner up, but a couple thousand more and not too much interior room for my lifestyle. I am so glad I made the choice of the 2014 wk2, I haven't looked back since June lol!

Ford Explorer was on the list for me, but as others have said, too many great standard featured on the GC.
I had two others I was close to getting:
- 2012 Toyota 4runner limited: Was a demo so could have gotten a deal. Dealer experience was not good. Also interior sucks compared to the GC. Looked at because they have great resale and are know for rock solid reliability. The new 2014s just came out and have a much nicer interior. Would have fought for my business a lot better.
- 2013 Cadillac SRX: I really liked it. It drove real nice and I felt most comfortable in it. It was at a higher cost though the Uconnect seems to match the CUE system that attracted me. Sometimes I do wonder if I should have went this way. Jeep should be better in snow though.
