In 4hi it is mostly a 2wd, but when the rear axle starts to slip it transfers power to the front until they spin at the same speeds. I believe in normal operating conditions its an 80/20 power split rear/front when not slipping. 4lo locks the front and rear together, along with a 2.72 gear reduction.
