Hello all !

I'm looking to expand my Jeep fleet soon and I was hoping I can get some tips from the group about what to look out for when looking at the used Jeep market. Other than the usual wear and tear item based on mileage, what else should keep an eye on?

I'm leaning on the 5.7 trail rated limited but, I am open to the 4.7 if the price/mileage is right.

Top tip, dont buy one.
Seems like strange advice on a website for jeep enthusiasts.

Anyways, I have an 08 ltd 2wd with 5.7L. I love my jeep. I picked it up used in Nov 2011. Since then the only two unplanned repairs were the radiator went bad at 60k miles and at 65k miles the O2 sensors in the exhaust side went bad. Everything else works fine and I've had a lot of fun doing suspension and brake upgrades on the jeep.

Just use common sense and be observant. Does it ride and steer good? Any funny vibrations? Strange sounds? Brakes ok? Rust or body damage? Tire or wheel damage? Body panels that don't seem properly color matched--concealed body work? Leaking oil from engine, trans or differentials?

And know when to walk away. Don't get too hung up on a car just because it meets your wish list. If it has problems it may not be worth it.

im 46 years old a realist and not a panderer, i drive a 05 5.7, there are better put together 4x4s for the same money, loyalty is all well and good, but they are still poorly made, with crappy materials and ''band aid engineering. This is my second Jeep there will not be a third. Have you ridden in Japanses and european 4x4s? l have with 50% more mileage, with the exeption of the VW Toerag they have all been smoother and quieter. Face it Jeeps in general are not well built

I'd definitely do a pre-buy qualified mech inspection on any used vehicle, particularly a Jeep where some owners really maintain them and others beat the crap out of them and dump them.

It's ok for the interior to look like it has been lived in, and they do accumulate rock rash on the exterior, maybe some "honor stripes" on the skid plates, but typically a vehicle that looks like crap is owned by someone with zero pride of ownership and is best walked away from.

Any mech inspection has got to include underneath the thing where many lot detailers may just paint stuff or don't bother, but any signs at all of abuse are walkaways. Old worn, or worse mismatched tires are a bright red flag, particularly mismatched that the prior owner didn't deserve a Jeep any more than a certain commenter here.

A full compression test on the hemi is not out of line--they are not cheap to repair if someone hasn't taken care of it.

On the plus side, if it comes with a FSM, owners manual, good quality carpet/cargo covers, and looks like it has had good care, figure it will still cost you a couple grand to put it in shape or tune to your preferences, but well cared for Jeeps will last decades and decades.

For the electronic gewgaws, try for a auto company backed warranty instead of third party for at least a year. Some of the electronic stuff can cost about as much as an engine to deal with.

No matter how pretty, if you see repairs in the paint, body, crap tires, headliner torn, carpets from trailer trash, do not run, walk. Its probably a money pit.

Ive been really happy with my 2008. You will read alot of negative talk here about the 2005 wk. Look for a 2008 or later, many improvements.
I second that! My 08 is awesome, sometimes i run it hard, and she has no issues great vehicle.

Well I confess I do not have a 4x4 Jeep. Sacrilegious for a Jeep I know, but I don't offroad, live in sunny California, and 99% of the 4x4's I do see are more for fashion than grinding earth. So, IMO my GC has been a very nice and well made machine. So, I thought I'd take a less biased view and found a website that posts reliability indexes and costs for each vehicle. This website seems to cater to the European market, as costs are expressed in pounds. I'm sure there are other websites out there, as I cannot remember the one I normally use for long term durability, but this is my first pass.

The lower the number the better.

Most of these samples represent a vehicle that is kept 4 to 5 years. Only the Subaru is significantly more reliable than the rest, not treading in the category of "POOR". I have test driven the Subaru and liked it, but low range gears and big tires/lift kits are not an option. Also it will have less cargo capacity which is the real reason why I passed on it.

As for driving a vehicle. The buttometer is unique to each individual. I passed on ford, chevy and toyota because I did not care for how they test drove. I did not try any European cars because I can't afford those or the pricey repairs that come with them, if and when they do break. I liked the way the jeep drove and it's primitive enough mechanically that I can work on it myself as long as electronics are not involved. This creator of the post obviously likes the GC and want constructive and specific advice.

So after researching this I have concluded all 4x4 SUV's have low reliability. If you are keeping your vehicle on mostly paved roads or maintained dirt roads and don't need to haul a double stroller and all the gear that goes with those kids for a road trip, buy a Subaru Forester.
