WL Hemi Exhaust on the GCL

I assume companies will make an aftermarket system for the Jeep? I crawled under the GCL yesterday and there is a very large central resonator/muffler with two pipes in and two pipes out, that split back to left/right mufflers that exit in the rear valance.

My guess is if someone made an X-pipe to sit in the same place and that big central resonator, you could actually hear the V8 without it being obnoxious, and probably cut 40 lbs of weight. Maybe pick up a few HP/MPG.

On the previous gen, if the exhaust was similar, who made a nice system?

You might want to poke through the "Engine Performance, Exhaust, etc" subforum in the "WK2" section to see what the popular aftermarket solutions have been. Presumably, these same companies will support WL, too, but not likely immediately. Stuff is more likely to come available after WL-74 is in full production because that's the bigger market for modding I suspect.

What do the exhaust manifolds look like? Are they log style like the WK2 or are they a more efficient design?
I am waiting for a WL-S…whenever they are released.
A 5.7 Jeep catback (also CAI) is costly and simply a waste of money, does not improve performance, and more often than not, makes it drive worse. A 5.7 that is quiet and fast is much more fun !
@KC-10ENG I need to crawl under and check the manifolds and see what they look like.

@dmsfun I think the resonator is going to be a great place to start vs a cat back set-up. I already have a hot rod in the garage, so I don't need "loud" or performance. I just think a BIT of engine exhaust noise would be an improvement over the very hushed sound it has stock.

I replaced the 'suitcase' muffler (I assume you're talking about) on my '18 (5.7) with a pair of Magnaflow round mufflers and a cross pipe. It's perfect, you can tell it's a V8 at idle and under hard acceleration but it's not much louder otherwise, and there is no droning at highway speeds. It's maybe 10-15% louder is all. I left the rear resonators in place. I would not waste money on a complete cat-back system; from all accounts there is no real hp or mpg improvement. In other words, the factory system is already pretty clean, just not quite loud enough.

My understanding is the McIntosh system, and maybe the Alpine system, uses mic’s to n the cabin to add noise cancelling as well.

it makes me wonder if there were a way to turn that off (like when pressing the sport mode button) so you could hear the exhaust and engine.

As it is, I find it hard to drive it with the paddles because I can’t hear what the engine speed is, and have to monitor the gauge to see when to shift.

I normally drive a manual (have for decades) and never realized how much I use auditory cues to shift until I bought this isolation-chamber-on-wheels.

Automatic Noise Cancellation (ANC) has been a feature in the high trims for years now and yes it uses internal microphones to help inject out of phase material to "cancel" the louder ambient noise, particularly at lower frequencies. I would think there's a way to turn it off somewhere in the head unit, but I've not had any opportunity to play with the new systems.

What’s the cheapest way to make my new Hemi actually sound like a V8? Brought it home yesterday, and if nothing sort of dropping 2K on a full system is going to make it actually sound like a V8….I’m thinking I should have just bought the V6

Os there any way to improve this for $300-400 bucks?

I had the borla cat back on my SRT I can confirm the noise cancelling dose very little…
If you want it to sound good, the suitcase mid muffler has got to go.
after living with the drone of the SRT
(especially in the backseat where the kids are)
I’m not running out to do that again..
on my hemi pickup I did a true dual exhaust from the manifolds back, into 2 flowmaster 40 series mufflers.
it sounds good and zero drone in the cab with the mufflers under the bed of the truck..
with Jeep I noticed the drone waaay more due to the mufflers sitting directly under the cabin.

I would like a set of electric exhaust cutouts ahead of the mid muffler (suitcase) then run short pipes into mufflers of your liking.
this way you have the best of both worlds! Dad mode and mom mode!

Have an appointment next week to look at a muffler delete.

Has anyone here done one of these on a Hemi L? Start with center resonator? Or the rear mufflers?

Any feedback on cabin drone from either of those?

I look forward to how this turns out!
I would love a mild level of V8 sound. BUT I can’t risk cabin drone.
I wonder if the Durango R/T mid resonator and/or rear mufflers would fit the GCL?

One of the things my wife commented on is her 2016 Durango R/T has a much better exhaust note than the 2023 GCL Summit with Hemi we brought home for a weekend.

The GCL was definitely reserved and quiet, but too quiet. We do enjoy the V8 sound when you get on the throttle of the Durango.

I’ve talked through the various options with the muffler shop. I was very clear that I want V8 sound..:but can not risk drone at all. I’ll take what I can get…without the risk of that. We’ll see how it ends up

Would likely depend upon pipe size and space allocation on the underside; the latter may be very different than the WD/"WK2" undercarriage with the WL
I'll preface this with the statement that I personally, know absolutely jack crap about cars myself. Both my BiL and FiL are professional mechanics, so the extent of my car knowledge is just what I pick up around them.

I don't know the helpful way to say to the shop "think Stock GMC Yukon Denali sound. That's what I want."

That's what the wife drives, and if I could get that sound out of the Hemi, I'd be happy as a clam.

There may be an overlap period of time when we will have both the new GCL SR and her current 2016 Durango R/T. If that happens, I can take some pics and measurements of the two exhaust setups to see if it's even feasible.

That should be really helpful to you before you commit any money to the project. :)
UPDATE: Back from the Muffler shop....Ended up taking the Resonator off.

First impressions, it helped quite a bit. For $114 bucks, I would say well worth it. Certainly won't be getting asked by anyone if it's a V6 or V8 anymore.

Exterior Sound: Fantastic. Really really really happy. Sound at idle is MUCH better, and quite pleased.

Interior Sound: There is some MILD drone at light acceleration. Maybe a 2 or 3/10. I'm going to give it 3-4 weeks and see how it sounds. Don't think it's anything I couldn't live with.

Tone: The "tone" is still a LITTLE high. Might consider aftermarket muffler down the road depending on how it sounds in a couple weeks

High Speed: Didn't have chance to do any interstate travel with it. Only got it up to 55-60.

NOTE: One thing I did notice, is there is now a distinct difference between the sound from the engine and the exhaust when I really got on it.

Quick update on this

- Still really like the overall sound. For $114 bucks that was a massive improvement

- Zero drone at Interstate/Highway speeds

- The one "complaint": If I REALLY get on it, I get a little of that tin can, loose metal sounding rattle at the extreme ends of the RPM range before it shifts. I'm not sure what actually causes this, but I'm going to start looking at options for possibly inserting an aftermarket resonator??? Something that eliminates that, and I think I would be happy as a clam
