I have a 2011 grand cherokee laredo x with 33k miles and recently it's been happening so often that when I want to start the car it doesn't right away like it stalls for quite a while I have to turn it off and try again like yesterday I had to repeat the same thing over and over until it decided to start
Can anyone help me with this problem? How much will it cost me to fix? And if is something I should really worry about thanks?

It is without a doubt a T.I.P.M. problem. (Totally Integrated Power Module)
We have a 2011 with the same problem. Only had it 3 months (44K miles) and it has been in the dealer 4 times (currently in today for 2nd T.I.P.M. replacement) The Module is $1,200 plus labor. Thankfully we have MaxCare and it only costs us $100 deductible one time. Good luck, you will need it.

 

Ugh problems problems with this jeep did you keep driving it even with this problem or did you take it in right away?

We kept driving it until it was convenient to take it in. It is becoming a real source of aggravation for us. We like most about the Jeep, but this problem is not going over very well with my wife.

 

I have a 2011 Laredo X and this is a known problem with the TIPM.
If your dealer can replicate the non start issue the fixed is more than likely a relay they'll install to resolve the problem. My JGC was fortunately still under warranty, but my service advisor said the cost to install the relay is about $300.

The first TIPM corrected our non start issue. The 2nd TIPM we are having installed tomorrow will hopefully correct the fog lights that don't work when you turn them on, but DO work when you have headlights on and make a left turn only.

 

I called a friend today that works at jeep dealer fixing them and ask if he has seen a lot of people coming in for this. I am having the same issue with my wife's 2012 GC and he said there hasn't but today a lady brought one in for almost the same exact issue I am having. He explained that they diagnosed it and it seems that the battery needed to be replaced. They replaced it and road tested it and the problem didn't come back. I'm hoping i am so lucky to only be a battery problem because I'm not sure if I'm ready to spend over a grand on the TIPM issue. I have been seeing more people saying its TIPM failure than battery replacement issue but gotta take a shot.

Battery is cheaper than TIPM, but I can almost guarantee that IF the battery really needs replacing, the TIPM caused it.

 

So you think if I replace the battery and the TIPM is bad it will just drain my new battery again?

When I took it to the dealer for my oil change I brought this issue I been having and the guy told me he wouldn't be able to get me a definite answer without diagnosing it but said it might be the batter that had gone out. I asked the exact same question as you and said why the battery would already need to be replaced. He came back with the hot weather we been having in Cali for awhile now is not normal so probably made the battery go out. I thought that was BS.

Actually, it's not BS. A battery can go out at any age, time or reason. Extreme heat or cold can really take the life out of them.

My 02 GC used to eat one every 3 years, almost to the day. And those were heavy duty, 800+ CCA batteries with 7-8 year warranties.

 

Took the battery to Autozone and the battery was completely fine. Set up the appointment at the dealer for tomorrow and I'm guessing I would be about a $1000 if it's the TIPM issue. So bummed

 

Read on another forum that there is a company that will rebuild your TIPM for a couple of hundred and warranted them. Only problem is that your jeep will be down for a couple of weeks. A lot less than a $1,000.00

 

Well I got my car back today I took it in yesterday they diagnosed that it was the TIPM and well yea they gave me to alternatives one to do something temporally but they did advice that the problem would come back eventually if I didn't do the whole TIPM change the second was to replace the TIPM completely and it was a big money difference but I opted to do it the right way I replace the whole thing and I got a ok price I guess since I been seeing others have been paying 1500 I payed 1,086 total with tax labor and parts I had no extended warranty the car is like new now I just wish things like these wouldn't happen especially on a new car

I also had my air conditioning (blend door) and my faulty passenger window fixed for $60 from a mechanic friend

I just hope thats all I have to deal with for a while ?

Hey everyone, I have a 2011 5.7 Hemi Grand Cherokee and experienced the same issue....would go through the starting cycle but not turn over. I bought it new and it now has 46,000 miles on it. Based on what I've read on the forums, I was concerned that the Jeep dealership would play a guessing game and start changing parts (starter, fuel pump, expensive TIPM, etc.) because it seems as if the fix is all over the map. Similar to some of the other comments here, I talked to a strong tech that specialized in diagnostics and drive-ability issues and he told me that the FUEL PUMP RELAY is the problem and that simply pulling out the relay from the TIPM and replacing it will not resolve the issue. He stated that he would wire / splice in a new relay because apparently, that particular wiring and section of the TIPM is faulty. He also told me that many Jeep dealerships simply try and replace the entire TIPM which we all know is expensive. Bottom line, I had the fix done; I was charged $69.97 for the parts and two hours labor ($192.00) and I believe that this tech got it right and knew what he was talking about. One week later and many intentional starts and no problems whatsoever. Attached are several photos that show the external fuel pump relay being spliced into the wiring harness and wired directly to the battery. Good luck to all that are having this problem!

 

Yeah that's exactly what they did to mine, put in an external fuel pump relay and it's been good ever since. Paid around the same that you did. I think some dealers are telling owners they have to replace the whole TIPM but I think this external fuel pump relay should be the actual fix. It's way cheaper.

My 2011 GC Limited has failed to start in the mornings for the past 4 days. Temps in the low 50's. Starts fine the rest of the day.

Are your fails in the morning, or all the time?

Push button start will crank for 'x' time (what ever it's programmed length) and nothing. I have to do it 2-3 times, wait a few minutes and then it starts fine.

Could this also be the TIPM issue?

 

Mine was the same way and I had to replace the whole TIPM it was 1,050 total that's the best route to go to get it done right

I might be wrong but this is my 2 cents with this issue you might be able to do different repairs to fix the problem but all of these fixes are temporary the real problem is the faulty TIPM issue it might fix the problem now but it will eventually with time come back unless you replace the TIPM I was told by the dealer I know they might want to screw you but I have a friend that works there and he wouldn't screw me over they gave me an alternative to temporary fix the problem for a way lower price or spend a 1,000 dollars and fix it for good but that's just me hopefully these other fixes everyones doing last and you see no problems because I know it sucks getting in your car and it not wanting to start specially a new car like all of ours
