I am looking to buy a 2014 or 2015 Jeep GC overland or summit edition, but before I do I wanted to get some thoughts on buying used at around 40k miles, any reliability issues? any things to look for in particular? I have concerns about the air suspension and how well it will hold up. Also any opinions on V6 vs V8 reliability?

Any thoughts or opinions are helpful.

Thanks

I have a 2015 Altitude (no air suspension, but V6) with 25K on it. I drove ~3,600 miles towing a 3,700lb travel trailer, and I have had zero issues. The car has been flawless and super comfortable. Others will certainly chime in on things to look for, but as a general plug for the vehicle, I am very impressed.

Yes, there are some instances where QL failed prematurely, but it would be a mistake to worry that it's a "common" issue based on that. Any time you have a more complicated system or higher level of electronics in a vehicle, there is a slight increase in risk for issues. MY14 and MY15 don't have any special reliability issues, although early MY14 JGS had some software related challenges in the drivetrain. That was corrected, however. These two years also had a major recall for the shifter system after some unfortunate incidents. That was also corrected by software. Remember, folks are a lot more inclined to talk about issues than they are to talk about how great things are... ;)

So your decision isn't really much different than buying any other pre-owned vehicle...if you like it and it checks out as a well serviced JGC, it's worthy of your consideration.

Agree with Jim and I can only give you the benefit of my own experience. I have a 2014 Hemi Summit and for the most part it has been flawless. Water pump was replaced at 51,000 miles and the ELSD motor failed at 62,000 miles. Both were fully covered under the drivetrain warranty.

I'll be trading in for a 2018 Hemi Summit only because I wasn't smart enough to buy the Maxcare coverage when the Jeep had under 36k. Some of the gremlins can be a pretty spendy fix but so far it has been great.

Yea, I had a problem early on with the QL, the compressor got replaced under warranty. I heard this is a $2k part. Shortly after I got the 120/8 extended warranty from Ziegler. Everything is so expensive on cars now, and if you buy, I suggest getting it. I figure that between QL, CRD, and Lux2 package that I ordered, something is bound to take a dump, and can be fixed for $100. Money in the bank, I think.

Love the QL BTW, the ride and adjustability. But too, some think it is too soft.

Some early build '14's with the V6 and Chrysler built 8 speed had a few issues vs very few with the German built ZF 8 speed in the Hemi and Diesel.

I was one of the unfortunate souls that had a 2014 (6-cyl gas) bought back by Chrysler (after taking a GC sabbatical for three years, I'm happy to say my wife and I took a chance on a new 2016 and now have 20K trouble-free miles behind us with this one, *knocks on wood*).

If I was buying a 2014, I'd just make sure I checked the Carfax and see if it had any major history of issues (things like it coming back in to a dealer many times, or been through three owners or things like that).

I'm a techie, so I always register things online, and I had done so with my 2014 and the Mopar owners' site. After Chrysler bought my vehicle back, I was updating my 2012 Wrangler and noticed my 2014 GC was still connected to my account. It had been sold up in White Plains, and had already been back to the dealer for an issue the new owner had.

I think the problem was that the entire electrical system had been affected by the initial main computer issue in my GC, and I would put money on issues being found years down the road from that initial event where things got fried and/or stressed. I was so glad to be rid of the thing and I wouldn't ever have trusted that vehicle again. I feel sorry for the poor sap that got it next.

I'm sure many 2014's and 2015's are just fine, but there are PLENTY out there to choose from. My only advice would be don't pick one that has a list of trips to the dealer. :)

Air suspension WILL fail eventually. Whether it's a Jeep, Range Rover, or Mercedes air lift systems are inherently prone to failure sooner than most other major systems thanks to all the seals, lines, high-pressures and stressed pumps.

Get an extended warranty (which is a good idea anyway) that will cover Quadra-lift, if you get a model with that feature.

I'm the second owner of my 2014 Overland, bought it back in June. I've only had 2 issues with it. First one was with the ac- it had stopped working. The blower and something else had gone bad. It was replaced free of charge. The second issue is with a coupe small air bubbles under the leather on the dash board.

Outside of this, I'm loving my jeep. I bought the maxcare lifetime warranty for it, which has me feeling pretty darn config confident.

Have owed a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee summit (with the 3.6 V6) for over six years. Had 44K on it when I purchased it and now have 89K. no issues, have had regular service performed at the dealership. Had the rear air shocks replaced about three years ago and the main drivers window control replaced about four years ago ( my fault I left the window cracked open during a rain storm). Have driven to Idaho, New Mexico, and throughout Arizona. gas mileage is usually around 17/18 mpg in town and 22/28 0n the highway( have achieved 30/38 at 85MPH on the open road). I truly love this truck and at 73 years of age figure this will be the last vehicle that I purchase. Good luck with your quest.
