does the buzzer sound decrease/increase in pitch along with your speed and acceleration?

 

Do you have a phone or MP3 player plugged in? If so...is it charging?

Interesting to see this come up. Just an FYI I test drive a 2014 Overland V6 tech and during the test drive I noticed a buzz/humming sound as well. At first it sounded like it could have been from the blower motor inside of the passenger footwell/dash area, but then later it sounded more like a buzz noise coming from a speaker. To me it sounded like it was coming from the front passenger side. The noise was definitely not normal and caught my attention the entire drive.

 

Hi and sorry for the delay. Nothing was charging at the time. It did not (does not) increase in volume with speed either. Yesterday it happened twice right about when we exceeded 40 mph. I cannot pinpoint the location, except somewhere in the front, one of the speakers perhaps.

It really odd and sort of becoming annoying. Dealer still clueless as to the cause.

 

I did a test drive on 2014 Overland V6 Adv Tech also and heard this. It sounded to me like it was coming from the drivers side lower dash area near the door.

 

Is the buzzing possibly the air compressor for the QL automatically leveling the suspension? I think the QL antomatically lowers below a certain speed so that may be why it was going off above 40mph

 

This doesn't happen till over 60mph. Sounds like a dirty signal is getting to one of the speakers.

 

Oh Boy, the "speaker buzzing" problem. Ouch! I had that with my 97 GC Laredo, and the never could fix it. Also the door locks would go crazy and click up and down and other electrical problems. The dealer said they most likely nicked and scraped the main wiring harness some place on a "burr" when pulling it through on assembly. They said they would have to tear the whole GC apart to try to find it. Take it back and RUN!

 

Any chance it is related to the speed sensitive volume setting for the radio? Maybe adjust that setting and see if it make any difference. I think it can be set at 0, 1, or 2. Probably not it, but worth a look maybe.

 

Happened to me as well a few times. I don't think its the speaker, and if it is, has nothing to do with sound actually coming out. I muted the audio when I heard it, and the weird buzz noise continued for a second or two after.

 

I'll just confirm that I've also experienced this on my '12 Overland. Mine is a V8, so it's not a V6-only issue. It's only happened when I've been driving pretty darned fast, never below 80 mph (test track, professional driver on a closed course, do not attempt this at home, your mileage may vary).

It sounds like it originates under the left side of the dash. In my case, I don't think it's coming from the speakers. Knock on wood, i haven't had this happen for a long time.

 

2014 Summit here. So far I noticed two noises:

1- A high pitch grinding noise front the driver side (sort of like a girl's bike thumb bell). Happens at random times not predictable so far. Very concerning.
2- A faint low pitch noise on the driver side when I make a sharp right tern under strong acceleration.

Is the first one like yours?

 

YES, the first one is EXACTLY what we hear ! Still have no idea. We are hoping that it happens when we bring it in to the dealer. Otherwise we will just end up dealing with it until someone comes up with a real answer.. Clueless !!

 

Well. I went by the dealer and as expected it didn't happen when the took it for a drive.

I'll hold on on further visits as well until someone sheds some light. Plus I hate leaving the car at the shop. They usually manage to put more smudges and/or scratches than I could in a lifetime of driving...


This is very concerning. It happens very seldom but when it does it is alarming.

FYI, to those waiting for a 2014; I just went from a 2013 Summit to a 2014 Summit: Acceleration and gas mileage are a quantum leap better.

 

I just test drove a 2014 overland V6 today and heard the buzzing noise between 35-40 MPH coming from the driver's door. The sound was consistent and repeatable. Like others said it sounded kind of like a bell kids put on their bikes vibrating. The sales guy heard it too. They are going to check it out and see what the problem is.

 

I've been hearing a similar noise...2014 Overland with V6. I would describe the noise as a rattling rather than a buzzer. I did not hear the noise during the test drive but have heard it almost every day since we've had it home. We initially thought it was coming from a speaker on driver side but now I think it's coming from the vent to the left of the steering wheel. It sounds like something metal is rattling within the ventilation system or behind the dash. The dealership has had the Jeep twice now to investigate but has had no success. Dealership seems to think the noise will go away over time as everything "settles." We only hear the noise within the first 5-10 minutes of driving. MPH has varied from very slow up to 50 mph. We have tried letting the engine warm up more, turning off stereo, turning off air/heat, etc. Nothing has worked and we hear the noise every day upon initial drive of the day. We never hear it after the initial drive of the day, only after the Jeep sits overnight.

Let us know if anyone finds a resolution. We have 500 miles currently and are going to wait until 5,000 miles before we bring it back to the dealer again, in hopes that this will go away by itself. We bought the Jeep with about 20 miles on it. I have attached a video of the noise I took with my phone. It's faint in the video but much louder in person.

Think I will test drive mine when it comes in before I stroke out the check and see if it has the same problem.

Same here. Exact same sound on my 2014 Summit.

 

It does happen when the rpm are very low as in the video as well.

Hasn't happened in the last two days.

 

Not feasible. You would need to test drive it for several days to make sure.

I will report if it goes away though. Who knows, they could be using clips too large for the brake pads and the rotors are taking care of it. Hoping for something simple like that.

Nonetheless, I am very happy. There dozens of material improvements from my 2013 Summit to this 2014 Summit.

I will be painting my calipers next weekend, so will take a look at the brake clips and everything else under there. My Overland does it as well. Really doesnt bother me, but I do feel like its coming from the speaker.

Is your stereo on (not muted) when this happens?

 

It sounds very mechanical to me but I will take note whether the audio is on-off next time it happens.

Did you notice the frequency of occurrence getting more seldom?

I'd love to see how the calipers turn out.

 

I've only noticed in maybe 4 times since i got the vehicle a week ago. I swear I noticed is 2x in a row when switching from FM to XM radio. we'll see! I'm not too worried about it. Seems like something too obvious to not fix once dealers/chrysler get involved.

Just painting them black, but will post pics when done. have done it on my last 3 vehicles. Really cleans up the wheel.

 

Not to get off-topic but do you use POR-15 to paint them or regular enamel?

Since we are not sure whether it is related to the brakes, wouldn't you want to wait a couple weeks to paint them in case the dealer needs to swap them?

 

I use G2 Caliper Paint System. It's on Amazon and Ebay. It's a 2 part epoxy brush on paint. It self levels so you don't get brush marks. I'll make a detailed post next weekend when done.

POR-15 has a higher temperature product called POR-20. If I don't have enough of the G2, I'll use POR-15 on the rotor. I like a shiny rotor and everything else black.
