So I noticed my oil interval was much lower requiring me to change at 5k miles. I waited until 7.5k to change and at the same time, my check engine light came on.



Code P1D30 for oil viscosity is too low. Combined with the change in the oil interval, I am referring the dealer to this TSB. Hopefully that solves it because I have a 10 hour trip next weekend for vacay...

Are you a MY16 vehicle? Are you using 5W-40 oil?

2014 diesel.

I used Rotella 5w-40 last change and this change as well.

 

Welp they said all my software was all up to date.

They told me the mechanic is going back and forth with the engineers and to give them some more time.

They said since everything is up to date, it appears that I am not getting the regens fully done because I do a lot of city driving. That resulted in diesel in the oil that didn't burn off when it was trying to regen.

Not sure how true this would be, especially since he tried to sell me on an oil change saying my oil is contaminated.

But they are forcing a regen right now.

I read somewhere else that green diesel said some of dealers improperly installed the fix to the P1D30 code.

My TSB was thrown out as I was already all up to date.

Guess time will tell once I get it back out there.

Diesel fuel is injected on the exhaust stroke of these engines in order to bring the DPF up to 1000 degrees and higher. A by product of this is that there is a minimal level of dilution of the oil. If you're getting full regens all of that fuel is supposed to evaporate, so it makes sense.

If you keep your emissions equipment intact, you'll still have that injection of fuel into the exhaust stroke. You'll just have less frequent regens.

Dealer sent me the Star case related to this. What Floridaman said is true.

If too much diesel gets into the oil, it will throw this code which means it is in the danger zone where the bearings might be damaged.

If you get this code and have software up to date, sounds like you need to change the oil immediately and head to the dealership to do a forced regen and have the code cleared.

This is the result of too much city driving. Unfortunately, I moved 3 miles away from work, which the jeep does not like..... Before I lived 20+ miles away and never had a problem.

Thanks for your info re code P1D30. I had this code recently (on my Jeep Grand Cherokee 2013) and realized I didn't reset the oil change message after the oil change. To complicate the matter, just before code appears it try to do the regenerate process but I could not go highway at the time. After reading this forum I reset the oil change message and cleared the code. It looks the car runs normal again. (at least no codes now) Cheers
