Ecodiesel catastrophic engine failure

Hi everyone, just wanted to let everyone know that my 2015 JGC Summit ecodiesel engine just 'catastrophic engine failure" at 16,796 miles according my service advisor at my local Jeep dealership. He will be starting the process of getting a new one ordered. I have mixed feelings about this. Once it is fixed it will have had a new engine put in and the fuel pumps replaced. Should I keep it and hope for the best knowing I am still covered under warranty? Or maybe sell it/trade it in for something else?

Hello sshaughn,

We're terribly sorry to hear about this unexpected concern with your engine. Please send me a direct message as I'd be glad to get a case started and escalate to a Case Manager for further handling.

I think FCA needs to do the right thing here and inform the owners of these 3.0L diesel engines what part is weak and what Jeep will do to correct the problem should it fail down the road after the warranty is exhausted. A diesel engine should last much longer than conventional gas engine and this is why some of us purchase a diesel. With the failure rate on these climbing each passing day, makes me believe you know what is wrong and will only address it case by case when they completely blow up. If there is something we can do to possibly avoid these failures, please let us know so we can try to avoid it. Thanks.

Mopar Maxcare is the same thing as any insurance. They hope when you buy it, you'll never need to use it. If everyone claimed big $ against it, the price would just go up next time you bought a policy on your new vehicle down the road. My maxcare $ is in my bank earning interest for me. If I need repairs, I will have to pay at that time. I'm hoping for reliability until I trade it off for something new. Although I'm attached to this vehicle more than I thought I would be after the warranty was out. Fingers crossed. Wish me luck.

From the Ecodiesel site: Lots of good info on our diesels.
My 2017 Ecodiesel blew up monday at 10k miles 6 months in

Driving home from Houston no warning light nothing, just boom. Sounds like it definitely slung a rod, waited three hours for a tow to a local dealership. They had nothing for me to drive and Chrysler wouldn’t even rent me a car to drive home. I had rent my own vehicle to drive home 300 miles away. Went to my purchase dealer this morning and they said did not do courtesy vehicles or get me a rental until a determination was made if it was a warranty (blown engine at 10k miles) I had to have a friend who’s a heavyweight in the local car business call and they changed their tune and gave me a brand new hemi to drive. Now my truck is stuck at a podunk dealership 300 miles away with a blown engine and they say I will have to haul it myself or pay cost of transportation to get it to purchase dealer.

Not happy......

I had my engine fail at 13k miles and it was also a bearing issue. I’m at 37k miles and haven’t had an issue since the new engine was installed. I was so pissed off when it happened. At the time I got a case manager involved and had actually started the lemon law process once the car has been in the dealer for more than 20 days. When all was said and done I was extremely happy with how the dealer and FCA handled the whole process. I didn’t end up following through with the lemon law and I’ve been very happy once replaced. The dealer at the time told me that I was getting the latest and greatest version of the engine. I’d ask them the same question, but I can’t think of any reason why you wouldn’t get a 2018 spec motor. Good luck!

Oh wow, seems like we have similar situations with low mile engine failure and getting a case manager involved. The case manager is going to get back to me with some options and I believe a buy back is one of them. I am hopeful that new engine going in has addressed those issues with the previous version. I obviously love my JGC and would prefer to keep it. I just hope its not a ticking time bomb. Quick question, what year is your Jeep and how long ago did this occur? Thanks for the response.

Catastrophic Engine Failure of my 2014 GC EcoDiesel on 4/18/18. Failed Oil cooler allowed coolant into the engine oil. New Long block, turbo installed. FCA Agent assigned to my case. No going on 30 days, 2 return visits for CEL.
My engine failed at 95k miles on the 100k mile warranty. I love this vehicle, but I don't feel it has integrity.

Oh wow, sorry to hear but glad its covered under the warranty. Good thing is you have a FCA agent working on it. My service rep at the dealership mentioned to me, "at least you have a brand new engine". Hopefully you can work out some sort of compensation besides the new engine.

Thanks for the info Summit, and your point is certainly one way to look at it, “good luck with the Russian Roulette game of engines” - he’ll be off warranty in 5k, another ecodiesel off their books, his problem to worry about. For the company that makes perfect sense, for the customer though I find it concerning.

Another way to look at it is yes, it is actually a new engine, they owed it to him fair and square, and the company ought to stand behind it for a customer who received a faulty one in the first place. There was a time when 100,000 miles was a big deal but the industry is way, way beyond that now. If they fixed the problem they shouldn’t have to be worried about providing an extension to the powertrain warranty, at least one to get the customer through a couple years for their troubles.

No warranty for a new engine that has a history of catastrophic failures in the first 25,000 miles? Not a place that FCA should be placing their customers... if they want to keep them. Unsat if true. IMO!

I'm sorry to hear of your similar situation.
UPDATE:
As of today 30 June 2018, the dealership has had my JGC and have not been able to resolve the CEL issues. A "Star Case" has been opened on it. The TCM was just replaced in an effort to resolve, with not luck. Remember, they trailered my JGC from my driveway on 01 June 2018. FCA has asked them to methodically check/replace all control modules, then test drive my vehicle to ensure CEL issues have been resolved. I will say the dealer has put my in a 2016 Rogue (loaner) every time they've had my JGC in for repair. Problem is the Rogue doesn't tow my boat!
Will update more when I hear more.

Update: As of today, 28 July 2018, the dealership still has my JGC. The next part to replace is the Instrument Cluster ($1400). Star Case Field Tech. feels it's important to do this.
Meanwhile my Nissan Roque (loaner) went in for an oil change & 4 new tires. It appears most customers with loaner-vehicles don't have to bring them in for service, as the intention is to have the customer back in their own personal vehicle.

Hi mbaessler,
My last two reports came back excellent but I want to keep any eye open for any rise in the wear/bearing metals. From my standpoint, we do a decent amount of towing, so 5k OCI's and an Oil analysis are cheap insurance. Just had transfer case and axle fluids changed at 49k by my trusted local indie shop. Stealership wanted $325 per axle which included a Wynns Differential Flush!

Harbrlife,
Happy to hear you have your JGC back. Did they extend your warranty at all?

Mike,
FYI - Here's the latest UOA on my JGC ED. All very good numbers :

FDA says they will not extend the warranty while the claim is open. Furthermore they will not discuss how much it will cost me to extend it after the claim is closed. I intend to pay if I have to to extend this warranty.

Its certainly your choice, but putting 5700.00 forward bet into a vehicle with 103K on the clock and appx 18K decreasing net worth, seems a little crazy to me. The chances of another engine failure is miniscule, and it would be hard to believe you could rack up that kind of repair money by fixing it at independent repair shops outside the dealership, with decent normal maintenance...
